Whenever I remove my drain plug I tape it to the wheel. I do this to hopefully prevent me from losing it and HOPEFULLY preventing me from having a brain fart and launching with the plug still out. I learned a long tome ago to never say never.

The gasket on your fuel sending unit is another possible source of the smell. When the tank is FULL, you may have some fuel leaking out around the sending unit but once the tank is down a few gallons, you no longer have fuel pushing up around the gasket and you can’t find the leak. Next time...
