a friend of mine has this motor one time it will start next time he tries no start, carbs rebilt last year prof. He checked fuses ok new batterys morn noon eve time makes no difference when he trys some times yes sometine no???????????? Ideas, help, advice all comments welcome. BTW when he put it away for winter ran fine :?

Need details ... What does is do even when it doesn't start?

Tell him try this ...
- prime bulb until firm w/ end towards OB up
- turn key On, but don't crank it, push key IN, hold it in place, and count slowly until - count of 6 or 8
- check prime on bulb by pumping it again
- crank it to start

Now, IF that motor has Quick Start, which a '96 may have, then you don't need to advance the throttle. If no QS, then advance the throttle a tad. If she blurps or pops and wants to start, but doesn't, you might have to push IN on the key again for a second or 2 whilst cranking, as that "chokes" it.

Yep. This is the drill for an Ocean Pro / Ocean Runner.
Mine was a 2000 model.
Great motors, but you do have to learn their idiosyncrasies.

when it dosen't start it just cranks till bat goes low. He said that if you keep trying when it will not start it smells like eng is flooded . The other eng (twins) starts with no problem at all. Thanks for input he didn't know how long to pusk key in for choke I will pass info on

Sounds like that OB does not have QuickStart. Tell him to try that sequence and ADVANCE the throttle in neutral.

If no SEPARATE throttle-in-neutral lever, then pull the entire lever OUTWARDS to disengage the gear mechanism, but leaving throttle-only intact. It sounds to me he might be trying to start a non-QS motor without priming it properly or advancing the throttle.

Also make sure his plugs are gapped at 0.030", as that is the BEST recommended gaps for OMC V6 motors.

do the plugs have to be indexed?
Not on that motor ... typically only on direct-injected motors.
