I am new to the forum and just purchased a 1997 Parker 23 DVCC that currently has a bad Yamaha HPDI 250 hanging off of it. I am pulling that engine and am looking for a used four stroke Yamaha for the repower. I have a couple of questions that probably have been beaten to death in other posts, but I am looking for anyone's advice on repower suggstions.

My first question is does anyone know what shaft length of motor comes on this hull? I am at work and have not measured the transom height yet----I believe it is 25'' and not 30''. Can someone confirm this?

More importantly, I am considering repowering with a F225 Yamaha. I for the most part fish alone and will have the boat relatively light insofar as gear and people go. I am more interested in fuel economy and not sheer speed. I have no real interest in being able to run WOT at 50 knots and most of my running will be in the mid 20's . Would it be flat out dumb for me to go with the F225 over the F250, or should I hold out until I find a good, low hour 250 to slap on her? I have found a 225 with less than 500 hours on it that is priced reasonably that I can pick up without having to have it shipped (local engine). The 250's I have sourced are mostly down in Florida and I am up here in cold and dreary New Hampshire for the time being. Thanks for everyone's help in advance :).

Which outboard model years?

Having the motor height set correctly is important and adding real Permatrim then dial in a prop . I believe a F250 has variable cam timing and F225 does not. Either one will be a great motor

The 225 that I have found locally is a 2004. Actually, the guy has a pair of them that he is selling. Very, very low hours for a 2004 which makes me rather nervous up front, but I guess you never know what to expect from something used. I can buy a new engine, but was hoping to keep from spending 21K right now knowing that I will not be using the boat too much until I get out of New England and move back down south. I just moved here for work from San Diego, so I have been rather spoiled with fishing on my whaler 12 months out of the year in relative comfort. I am really missing the tuna and striped marlin fishing out that way-----looks like its going to be haddocks and stripers and bluefish for the next year :(. I really have had good luck with the Yamaha 4-strokes-----I put a brand new 150 on my Whaler back in 2006 and ran the living snot out of it for over 14 years without so much as a misfire. I sold that boat fairly recently with the hopes of moving into a 23 Parker, which I have now done. Once the spring thaw happens (if it ever does), I am going to go over the Parker from top to bottom and refinish it to make it look and function like new. I just trailered this boat up from Beaufort, NC last weekend, and I was entertaining the idea of repowering the existing 2003 HPDI which has a bad cylinder. But, it's hard to go from using a 4-stroke on my old Whaler back to 2-stroke technology, so I have set my mind of getting a 4-stroke for this rig. I have read many of the posts regarding how to prop the 225's and 250's and how high to place them on the transom, so that will be fairly straight forward. Because the Yamaha fuel management system on my boat is kaput, I will install a new flowscan unit that will easily allow me to fine tune whatever powerplant I end up getting. Right now I am looking for suggestions what to do regarding HP options----or just as importantly, what not to do.

You need to check the mid section for dry exhaust corrosion. It can be repaired but expensive and labor intensive. Some areas are hidden if using a scope and found on tear down. Good luck.

More power does not necessarily mean poorer fuel economy.

My 2017 2820 DV with T300s gets better fuel economy than my 2016 2520 MV with single 300 despite more deadrise, 3 feet longer, much more weight, and twice the power.

My 2820 loafs along at cruise compaired to the smaller less powerful boat. My advice, max it out and enjoy. Good luck

Thanks for everyone's feedback. After having done some more research into the early F225's, I am staying away from them like the plague. That dry exhaust corrosion issue is something I do not want to mess around with. I am holding out to find a good, low hour F250 for the boat. There seem to be plenty of them available that can be shipped to me up here. That engine coupled with a 19p prop should get me pretty close to where I want to be. There also seem to be a number of slightly used F300's available.

I just bought the boat this past weekend and the motor was bad on it at that time. However, the former owner said that the boat ran great up until a point where it started missing a little bit on it's last trip out. The guy was about 20 miles offshore and ran it in at 25 knots, put the boat on the trailer and then checked the compression a few days later. Compression is good in five cylinders, but is dead in the remaining one. No other work or diagnosis has been done to it. One of those injector screens may have gotten partly clogged and starved the cylinder of fuel, causing it to fail. It may just be a bad piston, bad rings or it could be worse. I really don't know. It's a shame because the engine is exceptionally clean and only has about 500 hours on it. I considered repowering it, but I would really be happier with a 4-stroke and just be done. This HPDI has tons of great parts on it, but I am not sure what to do with it once I yank it off and replace it with the 4-stroke. I have enough garage ornaments :). The motor is a 2003 model.

The 23 DV is a heavy hull. Personally I would look at 250hp minimum and strongly consider a 300. When weather and waves gets sloppy the additional torque is priceless. I have a 225 on my 1994 2320 and when it’s sloppy and loaded heavy I really wish I had more hp
