When I bought my new to me boat, the lock set on the door handle was very tough. I was afraid of snapping the key off. I ordered a new Perko handle/lock set from Cecil Marine to replace the factory one. I’m still having the same issue. Any suggestions?

Hi Erie Dan, Is it hard turning the key, even with the door open? (Not engaging the door frame). For starters, and just for reference, the keylock with the Perko Door Latch Set only turns a tiny 1/8 " (About 45 degrees). Is that the same on yours?.... Some 'brainstorming', and you may have already tried this, but I've had good long-term luck/success with Powdered Graphite Lubricant. I'm sure there are countless brands. Right now I'm using some by Victor V-277 and another by Axxess Technologies.... It's cheap and easy, and worth a try (follow directions; Shake hard, before using)....
But, if the key/lock turns freely with the door open, but is tight when trying to lock the door closed you may need to 'alter' where the little latch engages the door frame. I noticed on our pilothouse door, Parker added a white 'something-material' shim/plate to make it where the Perko lock would engage the frame properly. It likely is not a stock-sized shim, and is fitted to mate each lock, to each door; I had to 're-make' that shim, as our door was too loose when closed/locked; yours could be too tight.... I'm just tossing out ideas here. It's unusual to have the same issue with two relatively new lock sets.

The cabin door knob/lock live kind of a hard life. It’s routine for most of us to operate with the door in the open position, and the door hooked to the bulkhead. Unfortunately for the lock, when we do this, the lock occasionally gets sprayed with salt h2o. Doesn’t take much dried up saltwater to make the lock “sticky”. I’m still on the original lock/knob for my 2005 but it frequently gets stiff. My only technique for keeping everything moving is frequent lubrication…..
