Looking for some more opinions. I'm looking at a 21 dvcc with a 150 yam. 4 s. Is the fuel efficiency a greater advantage over speed and power in the long run? I was looking at the JB CF 20 which comes with 150 but it's a lighter boat and not a dv.
 
That Yam 150hp 4S is supposed to be one hot motor, but I personally lean towards more HP on that boat, like 175hp at least. TomS has the 21' deep-V CC with a Yam 2S 175hp on her. Sweet rig!

Then again ... I have never run one with that specific 150 puppy on her ... I could be surprised.
 
We just purchased the 21SE with 200HPDI and so far we really like the engine. Some say to stay at or above 3/4 maxium horsepower rating of the boat. I tend to agree.

According to the guages I have traveled 90 miles and burned 33 gallons of fuel. This is during the 10 break period.

I vote for the 200hp engine over the 150.
 
I had a 225 2s Johnson before repoweded with 200 HPDI. That dog would eat with the 225, but much prefer the reliability and economy of the Yammy HPDI.


IMO, the perfect match for that boat. Performs as well as 225 4s and less weight on the transom.

150 would be fine on the SE, but not on the DV
 
I have that boat with a 200HP Yamaha 0x66 and think it is a perfect match.

Even though there are people who happily run even the 21 Pilothouse around with a 150HP, I recommend you go with 200HP minimum.

If you are running an inlet against a full moon, strong 5 knot outgoing tide with waves stacking up at the mouth, fully loaded with crew and fishing gear.. you need the power to get up on plane quick and punch it through on the back of a wave.

I wouldn't pass up a good deal on a boat that already had the 150HP, but if you have a choice, go with at least the 200HP.

IMO, get the more powerful motor!. It will work a lot easier to maintain the performance you want and I'll bet there won't be a significant difference in fuel cost because of this. A larger engine running easier is going to last longer also. Those two extra cylinders make a huge difference.
 
I have a 2008 21' DV with the F150.

With two aboard, plus full fuel, gear, ice, coolers, et cetera, I top out at approximately 41 mph.

Depending upon conditions in Chesapeake Bay, I "cruise" at 25-30 mph. The rig is as smooth as can be.

Also, the F150 is considerably lighter on the transom than any of the V6's.

There are few days one can run where I boat at more than 25 mph. Why buy an engine that at WOT will push the boat at 45-50 mph if you can hardly ever run at that speed.
 
Just to clarify my post, I'm advocating more HP to be able to get out of the hole and get up on plane quickly, mostly for running a strong inlet with a fully loaded boat in less than ideal conditions. Like Hakr, I could care less about top end.

As a data point, my 2-stroke 200HP maxes out at 42mph. My cruise speed is at 4000-4100 rpm, anywhere from 25-28mph.

The short answer is you can't go wrong either way :)

Also consider resale for when 2 foot-itis kicks in and you want to trade up to a 23 DV. More people will pass on that boat with a 150 than a 200.
 
Go for 200HP's. I could give you a lot of practical reasons but just think of the 2 statements:" Wahoo... I have much more tach to use up if I need it" or "she's peg'd and that's all she's got".
