Been slowly searching for a 23 CC. Seems like all the newish mod V boats are powered by the 200 Yamaha which seems substantially underpowered. Does anyone run a 300 on this boat? Is that crazy?

A mod vee 23 foot SE hull will be great with 200 hp. What is the maximum hp rating of a newer 23 SE, 250 hp? Stay at or under the max hp on the rating plate if you want insurance.

The deep vee 23 foot hulls used to be standard with 250 hp while more recent boats wear the maximum of 300 hp.

Yes, just looked. The 23SE is rated for a Max HP of 250. The 4.2l 250 is 60 ish pounds heavier than the 4 cyl 200. Couldn't even guess the price difference.
I bet it won't exhibit the rear end heaviness the DV displays, especially with the 200 4 cyl.
Part of the reason the DVs are so fast is the bracket. It is an apples to oranges comparison.

gotcha. The one 23 mod v, I’ve spent time on, imo, is on the slow side. It has the plate max hp of 225 mounted on the transom. I guess I was wondering, besides the aforementioned insurance concerns, why not run more hp so long as the weight isn’t an issue. For a boat such as a Parker, a cruise of 22-24 in the mid to upper 4000 rpm’s seems slow.

There are other things to consider in addition to HP when thinking about speed over ground - the age of the motor and how well it is running, motor mounting height, the prop, condition of the hull bottom, etc. . Often, little effort has been made to dial a boat in to get the most performance it offers. A difference of 50 HP will increase speed, but so will a better prop or a clean hull bottom.

Other than cost and weight, more HP is great up to the maximum HP rating.
