After a number of years of running around in 23' - 24' CC boats, I'm now seriously considering the purchase of a 2320 pilot house model Parker. My only real concern is the ability to observe thw port side of things when I'd be behind the second steering station. Has anyone had this issue or am I being overly cautious? Although I've sat in the cabins of several (all on land at the dealers) it seems to me that it might be difficult to observe ones surroundings from the pilot house model as opposed to from a CC boat. Any insights would be helpful.

Well, I went from a open boat to walk around to pilot house, sometimes directly behind me is dicey, but usually there is a sweatshirt or something in the way, but I firmly believe, once you own a pilot house and can close the door and are all warm and comfy, you will wonder why you did not do it years earler :)

Couple things in our favor ...

1) You can bend down (OK, I'm not the tallest man walking) to peer thru the port-side windows to check that side of the boat

2) The starboard side is traditionally the DANGER side of the vessel, with any vessel from 12 o/c straight ahead to 4 o/c having the right of way, leaving you to be the 'give way' boat

3) As Captain, it is your prime responsibility to maintain an adequate lookout. I always remind the crew to keep an eye out "at 10 and 2" to help me.

That said, in a busy port/area, you bet I'll steer from the main helm! Inside the cabin I mounted a cheap auxiliary 'rearview mirror' that I can look at out of the corner of my eye and give me a better idea of what's going on behind me. In seas or when fishing I can also monitor the cockpit. See this post here for more info.
