I needed a little more storage in the cockpit of my 2120 PH and after some thought I came up with this. On the port and starboard sides of the cockpit there are 2 sets of rod holders. I never leave my rods on deck because they represent a lot of hard earned cash. I do use the set on the starboard side to hold a scrub brush handle and a boat hook however the port side never got used. I installed a small shelf under the gunnels and it is going to be a great place to hold my brush heads and assorted but necessary stuff including a couple of drink holders that are out of the way.

The next problem was that there was not any place to put sunglasses, sunblock and whatever in the PH. I added a small but necessary little junk holder inside the cabin door on the starboard side. I had added a small ridge on my dash to keep loose gear but it kept falling off in rough water. It’s not so big that it will end up holding a lot of unused stuff but it will serve me well. I used Azak instead of Starboard because it is cheaper and much lighter but is every bit as strong for what I needed.

I have included a couple of pictures for your viewing.

Peter, nice ideas, and as usual great workmanship. Now I have to add some additional time into the winter projects :D

Work work work,Thats all I ever seem to do these days.Cant get the time to work on something like that, but I like the look, and idea.
My old Skipjack had the same little pockets or whatever you want to call them that ran up the sides like that ,and were very handy.

cools ideas. seems like when one masters the creativity of working with starboard, the storage/project possibilities are just about endless.

one idea that has been in the back of my mind is to remove the Captain's helm seat (i don't sit very often anyway....mostly lean) and install a padded leaning post/tackle station with some nice size storage drawers.

Very creative use of space in the best traditions of ClassicParker. 8) 8)

Who among us hasn't wished for convenient spot to stash smaller stuff while you're in the 'pit? Is your under-gunnel shelf mounted permanently, or is it removable?

Great idea. Thanks for posting! :D

John

It is removable, I ran Azak backing (1X1X3" pieces) all around the bottom of the shelf right where it meets the ribs and screwed it into the rib and used Life Caulk to seal the screws. It is not going to hold a ton of weight so I only screwed it in the front and one in the side. Thanks for the compliments

These same style shelves are in my list of things to do as well. Do you ever want a toe rail below the rod holder? They are now standard on the new boats. Wonder if they are convenient?

My apologies for going off-topic, but the project you mention has been on my mind for several years. 8)

In my case, I want a leaning post/pad on a base for the stbd side but retain the stock Parker seat on top of a base for the port side. I want to have rear facing storage for as many 3700 series Plano boxes as I can fit into both bases.

Here is what I'd be working with...

Nice job, I really like the shelf idea.

I’ve got my starboard side set up to hold all my nets, a brail, crowder and small transfer net. The shelf idea may work for my port side. I’ll have to spend some time thinking about it. Thanks for sharing.

I finished the storage shelf under the Port gunnell today. I first reinforced it as it is now holding some weight. I seperated it to hold 3 different size sinkers. I have not marked what size goes where but it is pretty obvious by looking at them. I have a section for 4oz-5oz and 6 oz and it will be handy to have them readily available. I usrd Azak because it is a little lighter.

that area under the gunwale cap sure is wasted space unless you build some kind of shelf to allow storage. other than my large buckets in the back against the transom fish box tucked up under the coaming bolster, i don't think i have ever use the space under the boltser forward of that first vertical support all the way up to the PH.

excellent job Peter.
