Anybody have an idea about what it would cost to add a second station, would it make a difference in price either up on the tower or on the deck !

gotta 2120 in the shop right now...it's getting a second station...it's a single engine rig...the cost should be in the $5,000range completed...what's required is new remote controls and throttlle shift cables, steering hoses and second helm, engine harness adapter...console for everything and the labor...it's not a cheap addition...

I just had a 2nd station installed on a 2520XL by Tri-State and it was about $3,600.

Pulleeeezze ... the parts won't exceed $1.5K 'new by retail' by shopping around, without the bulkhead, which could be the largest single expense item.

Tara:

Do a search as'second AND station' and '2nd station' and you'll get many posts, including my DIY method which cost me < $1K installed. NIB Seastar hydraulic helms can be had from eBay for $100s off marine store prices.

I am pretty sure that a kit was ordered from Parker which saved some labor time. I don't know what the actual material cost was as invoiced from Parker but I did do some comparisons as to what I could buy the helm and morse controls for vs the quote received. I could have saved around $500 in material costs for those 2 major components. The dealer basically said they were making "some" money on the materials in addition to what they were charging for labor, but would not do the installation if I bought the materials. It was kind of all or nothing. If I was in their shoes I would not want to take a chance on the material not being available when I was ready to do the job or the wrong material ordered. I don't believe that would have been the case on the helm and morse controls.

You could definitely save money if you have the time to do it yourself or can work with someone that would let you buy the material and they do the install. I think as a factory option the 2nd station is around $2,900. when ordered on a new boat.

new parts from the parker dealer was quoted at $2,800...i myself called the local dealer to get an idea of what they charged to do it...

there's more to this than meets the eye...example,hydraulic helm, replacement hosing from the original helm to the second station,3 lines, and hosing from the second station to the engine ram, throttle, shift cables from the inside helm to the second helm, then cabling from the second helm to the engine,"engine harness adapter" with a start stop switch...and the actual console itself...all new parts, not used

Thanks, I personally would think 5 to 6 grand was a tad high, but have not looked into it around here yet !

My understanding is twins are far more expensive due to the need for an electronic shifter. Anyone do research into twins??

Tara, don't you have twins?

No one, at least not I, am questioning the 'cost' of the parts from a dealer install. My post was intended to illustrate that an owner with moderate skills could effect their own install at 1/2 the cost if not less.

As stated the single largest expense is the fiberglass console the controls and 2nd steering wheel mount on. Then the Searstar helm, and then the controls, as typical Morse types run from $100 each for the Twin-S knock-off import, and almost $400 each for the fanciest Morse mechanical control head made ... and you need 2 of them.

Would it fit in the washboards like this?

Whaddya mean? Sure, looks like you could just surface mount a Searstar helm on sich a boat ... but that one's tiny enough you could run to the main helm in a second or less ;) ...
