My 1801 is the perfect platform for me although there are times when someone up on the forward deck may be handling a fish and would rather place thier rod in a holder as opposed to laying it on the deck. I am thinking about adding some rod holders forward of my console on the top-cap pretty much to match the 4 factory installed that are aft of my console. Any suggestions/ help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply and pics. The top-cap I was referring to is the cap on top of the gunnels not a t-top. I am not going w/ a t-top because I am a fly-fisherman and don't want the interference. I use a handheld radio for the same reason, no antenna.

I did it to my 23SE. I needed a safe place to put some of the tuna rods when trolling and you need to clear the lines quickly. Before it was like a Chinese firedrill and the rods ended up on the deck up front.

My only advice is to measure twice and go slow. Make sure to seal the exposed wood also.

It's basically the same principal on a larger scheme.

I forgot to add that these rod holders are great while sight fishing or casting to bft. The rods are stored in the holders ready to go as I putt around looking for surface activity. Plus adding those two Parker rod holders cost under $100. Hell, nowadays that's almost like free!

What 'kind' of advice ... brand, angle, placement :?: ... ??

FWIW here's a 'How To' I've posted before on installation:

"Reference the sketch below for additional install help. I lay a long extension drill over a 30-degree block (used as a guide) to make my PILOT hole. You can TURN the guide block to whatever angle to the gunnels, i.e., looking DOWN at the deck from above, you need. A pretty slick trick if you ask me.

Then I use a holesaw to cut in the rod holder tube, but I REVERSE the drill bit in the holesaw chuck so the non-cutting end is OUT and acts like a guide or PILOT into the hole you already cut."

I now have 9 in my washboards/gunnels/gunwhales ;) .

Thanks for the replies! The drill guide seems to be a smart method. Now all I gotta do is contact Robin and see how I can get some of the rod-holders w/ "Parker" stamped in them to match mo others, if possible.

No need to contact Robin directly as your dealer should be able to get them for you. But if they can't  ... then let's get Robin involved as to me, Parker delaers should keep a few in stock :) IMHO.

As Dale mentioned, contact your local dealer for them. They are inexpensive and they will match your existing ones. That diagram that Dale just posted expains it all.

Also, I forgot to mention that if you plan on putting any pressure on these rod holders you may want to make some backing plates for them. At the very least, use some large stainless steel washes on the underside to kind of act as backing plates and make sure to seal or treat the screw holes as well.

Without having to drill any holes etc. I just installed 2 clamp on rod holders to the grab rail on the console. I that they are up and out of the way. Took 15 minutes and cost about $40. Got the holder at west marine on sale $20 each. I am adding 4 more this fall, 2 more on the console and one on each transome box rail. Perfect set up for chunking 4 rods.

Matt,

Can you show a wider shot to get an idea of where you mounted them ? My dealer wanted $75 if I remember....

That is the only photo I have right now Foggy. Right now my boat is 80 miles away on Cape Cod and I'm stuck working on this beautiful weekend. Sorry. Weather depending, I may be heading down Wednesday into Thursday. I will take some more photos if I do go.

I planned the location of mine so that I could have full access from underneath. I'm not very creative and I have the mechanical skills of a baboon, so I made a large template out of cardboard. It was easy and the whole process went great.
