already have two transducers on the transom. i had an old sitex gps bite the dust due to lighting, so i removed it.

i will purchase a hummingbird 5" 797c2 combo nvb. i like the fish finder "side imaging" aspect and will use the gps as a backup.

i want to mount the transducer on a piece of starboard with a sliding tube arrangement, i.e. a smaller tube inside a larger one. the larger one would be mounted permanently to the transom and the inner tube would slide up and down. down for using it, and up for cruise speed etc.

since the side scan is only good a very low speeds, (and needs clear unobstructed views starboard and port to work properly) i would slide the inner tube down with the transducer attached past the other two permanently mounted transducers and use a clevis pin to hold it in place while i cruised around looking for structure and fish on the side scan.

anybody ever seen a "gizmo" similar to above idea. if so i would like to contact the person and see how they did it and type of materials used.

John,,,,

I have been lusting after the Humminbird Side Scan unit myself, but settled for the 3-D combo unit precisely for the reasons you cite here. The transducer needs a clear lateral window, and works at a slower pace.

When I was Googling around for possible transducer mounting scenarios, I ran across mention of trolling motor assemblies. The concept was to pick up a used/discarded trolling motor, remove the prop/motor head, and retro-fit the side-scan transducer at the bottom.

Since the trolling motor assemblies already have the mechanisms for attaching to the transom and rotating the tubular shaft, you have the mechanics of the transducer mount pretty much in place.

Sounds like a fun project! Keep us posted!

These pictures are from a friend of mine who fishes Giant Tuna in GOM.
Adjustable and tiltable so you can see your baits. Can you say Hardcore.
He also has mounts on either side of transom.
