Hi all,

I have a 2006 23SE center console with notched transom/modV. The boat has a T top and a large 45 gallon bait tank so the boat is heavy. I recently re-powered with an awesome new Yami 225 Offshore up from Salt Series 200. I have ventilation/cavitation problems that I can not cure. With the old 200 4 stroke I did not notice much slippage I have tried several props with the best being the new SWS-2 ss 15 3/4 15 pitch. In calm waters the prop does not slip as much as choppy conditions. I am getting 5600/41mph wot. 4000/29mph. 3500/25mph/3.2mpg. in calm bay waters. In choppy seas the prop slips from a minor amount to horrible. Going into it is not as bad as following seas. My trim tabs are apx 12 x 12 Linco and only 3 inches protrude from the transom. The other 9 inches are flush up against the bottom of the boat.

Some suggestions that I have received include; DoalFin, move trims to hinge at back of transom, 15 1/4 x 17 black ss prop.

Has anyone experienced this problem or do you have any information founded in previous experience?

Thank you so much for the help.

Doug from San Diego

What hole is the motor mounted in?? May be too high or too low.

Have you tried a 4 blade prop??

General consensus with a Parker is go up 1 or 2 holes and switch to a 4 blade prop, but that is with bracketed boats, not sure if notched is similiar.

Other question, is there anything mounted on the hull infront of the motor? Thru hull pickup for instance??

Since trying many props has brought no change,it might not be the prop. I would try dropping the engine a notch and go from there.JMHO

I think dropping the engine sounds like to correct fix. It is amazing how 3/4" can make an engine cavitate. The 15 pitch prop really turns up quick so it is not hard to blow the water away from it.

Thanks all for the suggestions,

This is a tricky one. I have tried 7 props, including 2 4-blade. The motor was originally mounted using the second hole. I have dropped the motor one hole and it still slips. The suggestions that I have had are to try a Doalfin (whale tail) and to re-mount the trim tabs on the transom to push them back 9 inches or so. I have one small pick up on the port side of the bottom for my bait tank. My previous 200 hp 4-stroke did not experience this problem.

If anyone has been through this and has another suggestion I am all ears.

Thanks again,
ps I have the data from the 7 props that I tested if anyone needs it

What is the thinking on the fin and tab changes? Get the boat more horizontal to allow better water flow to the prop? What motor weight did you come from? I seem to recall the 4str motors are maybe 100lbs over 2 str versions in that size. If that is all you're working against then maybe battery relocation would be a more sound option but i can't imagine 100lbs is all it takes to ruin the performance of a 23' boat.

Plenty of 23SEs with F225 motors out there, wonder if any of those guys have these issues.

Is your livewell a factory unit or an aftermarket mounted at the transom?

I know this seems common sense but what length is your transom? Was your old engine a 30inch shaft and this new engine a 25inch shaft? That would cause this exact issue. Do you have picture of your old engine. The old Yamaha OX66 30 inch shafts did not have a spacer and the new four strokes do to make them 30inch shafts.
