I have a 2005 2320 P.H. with a full transon. Motor 200hp HPDI [2 stroke ] [3 blade S.S. prop]
When i go offshore fishing with 4 people and go 40 miles out, i burn lots of oil.
I went out friday and had to come back in at full speed [WOT] due to a storm that was heading into us.
When we got back I burnt 65 gall. of gas and 2 gallons of oil. I filled the oil to the top before we went out. It was empty when we got back. Maybe 2 1/2 gallons of oil. Its been like this for the 5 years i had this boat. The motor runs great.
She only burns lots of oil when im at full speed. My mech. checked it many times and said its ok. Im under powered-so at full speed that motor will burn lots of oil.
Does anyone have any answers ?
OR have the same boat n motor ?

That's about what my Ox66 250 burns all the time, and what I've been told is "normal" but I don't know if the HPDI motor is a bit stingier on oil normally.
 
I know you can adjust the oil pump on the OX66 motors. HPDI might be the same. My old 200 OX66s were set from the factory to run very oil-rich. Get in touch with Andy @ Shipyard Island for the procedure. It's very easy to do.

Parkers come from the factory with Yamaha motors, so must of us are running Yammies of some sort. Those of us still trapped in the late 90's run Ox66 motors, which was the first fuel injected 2-stroke from Yamaha that used an Oxygen sensor and a "smart" fuel injection system using input from the O2 sensor. The next generation of motor was the HPDI, which is a smarter/later version of the OX66 2-stroke.

Unlike your HPDI, the OX66 is a pretty "stupid" engine that has a very rudimentary computer system (it blinks a trouble light to tell you what's wrong, but only in "real time - yours actually stores codes that can be read by a computer).

From what I've read, it is very important to make sure your HPDI has all the latest updates to its computer, since the computer controls a lot of things (including an electric oil pump, I think)

I would call your local Yamaha dealer and figure out if there are tech bulletins and/or updates for your particular model/serial number and make sure they are all applied.

Do that first as a baseline, then begin twiddling things afterwards. Otherwise you could end up chasing ghosts for a long time.

Another thought - what RPM range are you normally operating? I had a stark realization recently (I feel like an idiot now) that our boat is VASTLY under-propped and slipping BADLY. Our cruise RPM range is between 4700 and 5000 rpm to get the best ride (actually its better at 5300 but that really feels like pushing it!). I now realize that this is WAAAY too high, and I think this is probably at least contributing to my high oil consumption rate. I know the OX66 (and probably HPDI) motors have a "variable" oil injection system that varies from 100:1 at idle to around 20:1 at WOT. Within the next week or so I'll be putting the RIGHT prop on there, and it will be interesting to see if the oil consumption rate goes down. It should...

So, long story short, your oil consumption *could* be due to excessively high RPM operating range, depending on how you typically run the boat.

After I re-prop, if I'm stil having oil consumption problems, that will be my next check. A "consumption" test (rather than an output test like in the manual). You pull the oil input line and hook up a length of clear PVC tubing filled with a measured quantity of oil, then run the motor at 1500 rpm for three minutes. You determine pretty quickly if the oil pump is consuming too much oil. The advantage of doing it this way as opposed to the method in the manual is that you don't have to run a separate tank of pre-mix in order to do the test.

What are your fuel burn numbers?

Usually burns about 13 to 16 gph at cruise, depending on load and conditions. That's doing about 23 mph and 4800 rpm or about 1.6 mpg. Interestingly, according to my calculations, the prop at that speed is slipping between 32% and 38%. Lots of room for improvement. I'm beginning to also believe the engine might be too low. I find the best numbers are when I give it generous tabs but trim the engine up more than normal (normally I run in the mid-point between "2" and "3")
