danielb, I just did the opposite move. I moved from VA beach to LI. You are going to absolutley love fishing down in VA. There is fishing year round and I left the boat in the water year round. There are plenty of marinas/boatels to keep the boat at that will be half the price of anything on LI. The variety of species down in that area is numerous compared to NY and the inshore fishing offers many options with drum and cobia up to 100+ pounds and be within a couple miles from shore. If you want some exact marinas and some more info on fishing locations shoot me a PM. Good luck with the move.

I may be of some help. If you are moving to chesapeake your boat will be about 20 min. away to the slip. About ten marinas with wet slips from 8.00 to 12.00 a foot. We fish all year. This was our worst winter with 19 days of hard freeze and we had a little ice with no damage! My 28 parker stays at a small marina in little creek. Norfolk va. Great people that look out for your boat! If you need help when you get here I can show you around the marinas so you can pick out a slip that you want.

By your post I am assuming you are moving to the city of Chesapeake. As mentioned in other posts, there are plenty of quality marinas in the Tidewater Region. Depending on what you use your boat for should determine where you keep her. Fishing or cruising the rivers and lower bay- Portsmouth has a nice new facility that is close to Chesapeake, fishing or cruising the bay, offshore and eatern shore- Norfolk and Virginia Beach have a nice marinas but are further from Chesapeake. The fishing here is great for inshore species such as red drum, flounder and speckled trout. The offshore fishing is great as well with dolphin, tuna, kings, and Aj's. There are some great places to cruise as well.

My dad has a house on the bay in Hampton Va. He is very high on the 'Salt Ponds' marina.

This may be a little too far from Chesapeake 30 minutes or so with good traffic. The nice thing about Salt Ponds is you are right on the bay. Lots of good striper fishing at the bay bridge tunnel.

Best of luck. I have lived in VA and NC my entire life. Great boating and milder winters. And hell, with all this global warming, pretty soon you will be able to wear your flip flops all year! Can't wait!
