I'm about to install some pop-up cleats and need some expert advice, please. Boat is a Parker 21cc.

For each cleat, installation will require drilling 2 holes in the gunnel, roughly 5/8 dia. and about 7 inches apart - then removing the rectangular(ish) section of gunnel between the 2 holes.

What is the preferred tool (and method) for removing the material between the drilled holes? They're Accon cleats, so I can bolt down the backing plate as a guide/template over a layer or two of painters tape. Looking to minimize any gelcoat chipping...saber saw with a fine blade??

Thanks, Parker bros.

FWIW I installed similar cleats and used a jigsaw with a DOWNward cutting 'new' laminate blade installed. Also cover the area to be cut with blue tape. You should also coat the exposed wood core with expoxy, if even just 5-minute type, protect that core.

Thanks, Dale. I did a search and saw your post...I figured a jig/sabre saw might be the way to go - and the laminate blade makes good sense.

I'll hit the cores with some CPES and hopefully be good to go!

Thanks for the help.

I second what Dale said about treating the area with epoxy. It's an easy process and a must to keep the core protected for years to come. I did it with my outriggers through my t-top and my extra rod holders I installed last year.
