Looking for some feedback for my next step. I am the second owner of a 1990 1801. The 1999 Johnson 115 gear box went the other week. I was planning on moving up in 2015 anyway but now trying to determine do I spend about $3k to fix lower unit then sell, repower with used 4 stroke for about $5k, or sell as is (??) Boat and trailer are in very good shape and the motor compression is great just needs new lower unit.

Welcome any sage advice as I keep going back and forth on what to do and what is most economical.

Agree with Bryan.
Replace the lower and enjoy her until you are ready to move up.

x3. That is a fairly easy project to do yourself. I replaced one on my old 170 Henry O with the 1989 115 Yamaha. Even doing it for the first time, it's a 3 hour project taking your time and scratching your head a bunch. Go for it and fix it. Good luck.

Great feedback thanks. The mechanic was also telling me I needed to replace motor mounts but I don't think it was pressing issue.

Thanks again
