I know the instructions say to use one, however if i install one it takes off tension in the chain for the anchor & the shaft of the anchor bangs the pulpit. The height of the windlass prevents this from happening. Im sure that over time this will damage the gelcoat. If i pull the chain taunt with the windlass there is no way the anchor will hit the pulpit. Then I got to thinking. The same boat I bought in 05 didnt have one, I spend alot of time on a 55' & a 35' and they dont have one, all factory. Is it really needed ? Thanks !!

I don't have a windlass, but I do use a lock (and a safety).
I'll try to get a photo today when I go over to work on her.

I have used a windlass for many years without fail. I snug it up with the windlass just to hold it in place and secure it with the safety line. You should be able to keep the anchor in place without putting alot of tension on it. When you are at anchor do not depend on the windlass to hold the boat. I installed a cleat between the windlass and the anchor roller just slightly offset. When anchored tie off the rode to the cleat and you will be good. Good luck
