Can someone explain to me the logic behind not sealing the back edge of the hatch? It was installed from the factory like this since we bought the boat new.....

Even without the back edge bedded down it took me over an hour to finesse the hatch out of the cutout without bending it. Another hour and a half to clean up the mounting surfaces and another 30-45 minutes to bed it down in 4200 and clean up the mess.

WTF??

The lunch buzzer at the factory must have just gone off and they just dropped what they were doing.....
:(

I agree it looks very intentional, but I can't figure out why. I'm going to email parker about it just out of curiousity.

I was able to caulk the entire underside of the hatch by caulking the top side of the cabin. I also ran a second bead along the vertical side of the hatch. I then just carefully laid the hatch back down in the cutout. I had sealand squeeze out from both the top side and the bottom, and although it was a mess I was able to clean it up nicely and am farily certain it will be water tight now.

Only problem is that if I ever need to take it out again I'm not sure if it will move..... :)

Not with 4200 on it it won't.
That hatch is there for the duration now.

One of the things I have discovered with silicone is a decal eraser will take off the final bits that are left after cleaning up what you can with rags etc. You can buy them at a local auto parts store and you just put it in an electric drill but be carful not to turn it up more than 1600RPM's or you could burn the gelcoat. Just be sure the silicone is dry before you try this method.

Emailed Parker the photos and an engineer got back to me, basically just apologized and said that it should have been sealed around all 4 sides. I tried to work a free hat out of it for my troubles but I don't think they were amused..... :)

Well I had a box on my porch after work today, with not one, but two nice Parker hats inside. :)

Parker installed my windless with what appears to be 3M 4000. It is a very strong, but pliable adhesive/sealant. Best part is that with a sharpened putty knife you can remove the part. A hatch may someday need replacement and will need to be removed. I'd reinstall with 4000.

One of my projects is to remove all the Beckson plates in the forward bilge, over the tank, and over the rear bilge and rebed them in 4000.
