Greetings:
My 1999 2520MV is powered by twin 150HP (2 stroke) Yammies. About a year ago, the fuel flow gauge began to intermittently stop indicating fuel flow, first on the port engine, then the starboard. Periodically, the fuel flow indication would resume, but only at high RPM. I discussed the problem with the Yammie dealer/mechanic that does my heavy maintenance, and asked if the paddle-wheel sensor assemblies could be disassembled and cleaned. They are positioned below deck, between the fuel/water seperators and the engines. The dealer said that type of maintenance is not recommended and that the answer is to replace the sensors with new ones. At approximately $185 per, I'm researching any alternative solution and gratefully appreciate any advice.
My questions are:
1. Can the sensors be removed, disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled with a reasonable expectation that they will perform?
2. Could the fuel flow indication problem be caused by some other discrepancy? If so, what else? (I've checked the integrity of the electrical connections at the sensors and the other gauge functions all work {eng synch}).
Regards,
Dan
