All of the boats I have owned in the last 25 years have been powered by mercury and the last 5 months since I bought my Parker is the only exsperience I have ever had with Yamaha and I'm not likin it. My 2003 225 4 stroke only had 530 hrs on it yet after 1 month I had fuel in the cranck case from stuck open thermostats which I corrected. Now the boat stalls after it has been run then tried to restart, thats not the bad part. The bad part is that the vapor recovery kit that may solve the problem has been disconntinued, which I had been told by my local dealer, he suggested that I contact yamaha about it. The really really disturbing part is when I called the customer service line they tell me yes sounds like the problem but we do not offer the part and you must contact the technical support to see what the solution is, only I cannot talk to them they won't give me the number. So the only solve right now to get the part or any type of answer is to take it to a dealer so that they can make the phone call for me. Doesn't seem quite right

Something ain't right. I never heard of a Yamaha part being obsolete. You can buy any part at Boats.net or from other Yamaha dealers.

Also, why would the thermostats lead to fuel in the crankcase?

Motor is running too cold, rings don't get 'warm' enough to seal, fuel mix bypasses rings and settles into crankcase.

I'd call Andy @ Shipyard Island Marine - tell him I sent you from CP - he's the best on-line resource for Yummiha OBs (of which I don't care for either ... but that's another story).

Thanks Dale for the resource I appreciate that. When I called the local Yamaha dealer he said that he had installed these kits before and he thought that was the problem, once Yamaha said they would only speak with a dealer I called him back and he kinda changed his mind saying I'd better bring the boat in so they could check it out first because it could be alot of things, but he can't take it for another week so that gives me time to think. I guess I've just been spoiled for the last 20 years, the marina I stayed at was a mercury dealer with an excellent mechanic and any problem or question was solved with a short walk down the pier. Thanks again Mike

Yamaha really got a black eye with the "making oil" issue.
Unfortunately, there are still boats out there that have not had the updates to correct the issue.

Thanks Dale, I e-mailed Andy at SIM, what a nice guy. They do not offer the part but Andy gave me some great advice which I have posted below for everyones reference, I will be taking my infared thermometer along and logging temps before each restart. I hope at this point it's not a vapor lock!

"Hi Mike,

That kit is no longer available. The workaround is to get a copy of the tech bulletin on it, and order the parts that are on it. We don’t see many vapor issues being in the upper Midwest. 85 degree’s is a really hot summer day.

I know the parts consist of a new engine computer, so its going to be expensive. Gas turns to vapor because of the higher temp under the cowling. If you want to make sure that is whats happening, I suggest purposely try and get it to do it. Recreate the problem. Once you get it to not start, try removing the engine cowling and let the engine sit with cowl off for 10 minutes or so. That will lower the under cowl temp. If the engine starts and runs fine that way, then you have a vapor issue. If it still stalls, it maybe something else.

If you have a infared temp gun, shoot the top of the VST tank when it doesn’t start. Then after 10-minutes or so shoot it again to see if the temp of the VST has lowered.

Has is always done this, or did it just start doing it?

Thanks

Andy"
