Clear silicone grease is what you want. It will stay put, not make a mess if any gets on you and doesn't stink.

I agree on the clear silicon grease...I have had to use it before. Those ss ball bearings just get sticky unless you keep grease on them.
 
Try Fluid Film or Lubriplate SFL-0. Neither are tacky/sticky like silicon grease. The SFL-0 is a food safe, water resistant grease. Even if you wipe it off it will still provide protection. I think Fluid Film is lanolin in aerosol form. It's a great corrosion preventative and lubricant. Both products are non-toxic.
 
I also use Fluid Film. It's great stuff.
