Jim,

Great article! Thanks for sharing it with us. These guys really pulled out all the stops when it came to testing every available anchor style. Some surprises in the results as well. Although I would have liked to see a little more testing on some bottom types other than long stretches of smooth sand.

Usually when I drop anchor I follow it down and check to see how it's "set" before I swim off for the rest of the dive. About 50% of the time I find the anchor has crossed over some old lobster-pot trawl line, or hung up under some rocks or ledge that would make retrieval rather nasty. But then again, those are the most interesting areas to dive. If it's a long smooth barren stretch of sand like they did the anchor testing in, you won't find me diving there. 8) 8)

I'd love to hear from anyone who is using the Rocna or Manson Supreme style anchor. I'm looking to replace my danforth knock-off and would prefer something up on the bow roller that is less intrusive. The sharp ends of the danforth style stock always scare me that I'll scrape a hull during a windy raftup. I'm mostly in muddy bottoms.

Now that I have the windlass, I have the 22 Lewmar Delta and could not be happier. It did well in the tests too.

Two things are important to me, one of course is holding the bottom, but the other is getting it off the bottom when it time to go. The Delta sticks great, and has never failed to let go when driving over the top of it.

My trusty old Danforths held pretty good, but they were hell to get unstuck sometimes, and I got tired of straightening them out.
