While I was in the process of installing another pair of rod holders on my boat...

I spent a good bit of time on my back looking up underneath the washboards.
What I saw did not thrill me.

After years of shrink-wrapped winter storage, several of which was over an hour away at my dealers lot, a lot of mold and grunge had built-up over time.
I have a feeing that my instructions to "vent her well" went unheeded. :(

In years past, I've sprayed some bleach under the washboards to kill the mold spots, but after getting up close and personal with the underside of the washboards during my project, I decided more definitive action was needed.

I started out by just hosing out the undersides of the washboards.
Holy crap! I couldn't believe the dirt and funk the rolled out onto the deck!
14 years worth, apparently!

Next step was to mix up a bucket of Orange Zep soap and a bit of bleach...
I used a big fluffy car-wash sponge, and washed everything, and everywhere that I could.

Then, I took a spray bottle and mixed a 60/40 solution of bleach and water and sprayed the hell out of everything under there while the soap was still on.

After that, a second sponging with the soap and bleach mixture.

Let everything sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Any remaining mold spots were hit with the spray bottle again, until the undercarriage was sparkling clean once again.

No photos... but then you would not have wanted to see that mess.
She looks great now though! :)

So... take a look under those washboards guys. You might be surprised at what you see.

Yep Kevin this is why i DO NOT WRAP MY Boat......

I pull it in December after leaves r gone and Bass go south...

Then i power wash light clean and wipe on a liquid wax.....

comes march ..B4 the leaves r making a mess i bottom prep and wax hull to rub rail.....

Fish alll spring till June then i wax n polish when its nice n hot ....

I have way too many friends who waste 200 to 400 to wrap boat only to have it get filthy in spring after the trees go nutz....

PILOT HOUSE's ...lock door leave proper ventilation and moisture control in cabin and done.....

During my fourth season with my XL I realised how much crud had accumilated under there when I stuck the hose up under when cleaning after fishing trip. Now I keep up with it. It was nasty. Another spot on my XL that traps crud is behind the hull sides of the companion seats and the steps behing the cockpit. Have to hose that ourt regularly too.

It is amazing what accumulates under there!
I think I have her under control now though. :)

You really, really ought to get some proper wood blocking for that boat. Cinder blocks are a great way to find the boat on its side. There's a reason they use wood or metal, not concrete.

Bringing up a old thread. Sorry. :)

A cheap product that I've found works well that I used today. I used this in the bilge back where it is hard to see. It is Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover.

I sprayed it on....Gave it a light scrubbing and hosed her down. It took a 17yr build up and made it look like a white porcelain sink. I was VERY pleased.
