I was told to provide pictures so I'll give it a shot, though I am not sure about loading the pictures. I have not done it before for ClassicParker.
Of course, I hadn't installed a thru-hull in the bottom of a boat before either.
I can only figure out how to upload one picture per reply so..
This is the plug that came out:
I tried uploading but it said the pictures were too big.
I used to resize using irfanview but now I have a Mac which will resize for wait, what if I email it to myself, I'll try that,

only 21 more items on my list.
I haven't even started the engine since it got here from Florida.

Is that a TAMD41-B? Good luck, I fought that engine for a few years in our old 30' research boat, and ended up selling the whole boat because of that lump.
 
It's actually an AD41-B.
I don't know why you would call it a "lump". While the Volvo's have issues-mainly the fact that the parts prices are a few miles past ridiculous; in general they are pretty reliable and can live a long time.
My last one was a TAMD 41A. It had over 3600 hours on it when I sold the boat.
The new owner re-powered and sold the engine as a runner for 6K.
The B is basically the same engine with a few less quirks like smoking when cold.
But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Ours had 8000 hours on it, and had been poorly maintained for many years. It also had a habit of wearing out injector tips every year, and blowing an injector pump (new, not rebuilt) every 3. Plus, we had a duo-prop outdrive that ate a cone every year. I know those engines are pretty reliable if taken care of, but the parts are awfully expensive, and there are precious few mechanics that can properly take care of them. The other problem is that it make a whopping 140hp when new. It weighed over 900#, and made half the power of a comparable Yanmar.
 
Sleigher... if you are running a Mac, download GraphicConverter and use that to re-size your images.
Reduce them to 800x600 (or 600x800) and you will be golden.

Maybe you had an AD40B. The 41 is rated for 200 hp although some references show it as 185.
The beauty of that engine is how much it weighs and the mass associated with the horsepower.
Volvo uses the same block (or they used to) to squeeze out as much as 300 hp. Unfortunately there is an inverse relationship with the amount of horsepower vs the weight when looking at the longevity of the engine.
But, 8000 hours is pretty kewl!
Anyhow, I didn't want to start anything over the Volvo issue. If I had the room and the money I'd stick a Cummins in there.
As far as the outdrive is concerned, well, I'm not a fan of outdrives but it's what I got so I'm stuck with it.

It was a TAMD-41B, but a commercially rated one, with a lower than normal rating.

I know all about power-to-weight-to-longevity ratios. Just look at the Cat 3196 and 3406E. I've been involved in replacing both, one in a lobster boat (3406e to Lugger 6140AL2) and one in an aluminum cat (twin 3196 to... well, twin 3196 :( )
 
Sleigher, I didn't see this in July. When you say auxiliary cooling, do you mean you are running through hull cooling line and outdrive piped cooling water to engine together, or only when you want more cooling?

I took a gas I/O this month and just had the raw water pickup bypassed from the outdrive to the through hull. Volvo I/O, has no impeller in the outdrive, uses a sea water pump on the front of the engine block.

Yes, I am using both. I don't think that I need the one from the outdrive but it was easier to install the TEE than figure a way to block the outdrive pickups.
It does give me an extra level of safety in case the thru-hull got plugged. My last boat was an inboard and I never had a plugged intake though.
I may end up eliminating the outdrive pickup at a later date.
I'd just like to get the boat in the water.
