I am starting to do some more long range trips (>100 miles) into Mexico and this is outside of the typical tow range from San Diego. Anyone with suggestions for an appropriate kicker motor? 15 hp or more? Does it need to be long shaft? Ideally, I would get something that I could take off and use for an inflatable so <100# is better. Thanks

Just my opinion but all you need is enough motor to get your boat running at hull speed. You sure aren't going to get her on plane with any 'kicker" size motor.

I have the 8.8 high thrust, 9.9 is probably a bit better, 15 is probably more than you need. I got the longer shaft. Can't remember the length but it think it was a 28" ?

Here's mine.

Did a lot of trolling with a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust on my Osprey26lc with Volvo D6310 diesel and it was plenty of power. No need to go bigger as it won't make much difference. If you are using it as a "get home" motor, the smaller engine will give you better range. The 8hp was nice as you had power tilt but they may make the 9.9 with power tilt also.

I had a kicker motor on my 2520XL, Yamaha 225 and Yamaha 8 hp kicker. I tried to use the kicker for trolling. The dealer told me to use the 225 as a rudder to control the steering which worked when there was no wind. But with a little wind, forget it, you had to steer by going back and steering the kicker, i.e. the kicker was not tied into my steering system. I hated it.
