The snow is finally melting in Maine so I'm thinking about the upgrades I will be making to my Parker 1801 this Spring. I will be adding mid-ship cleats, more rod holders, a bimini (Admiral's orders), and a leaning post. I will likely get the leaning post from a local marine fabricator.

Before I order a leaning post, I'd like to get some opinions. Is a seat back on a leaning post something that is great to have, or a feature that doesn't really get used?

I'd like to hear your experience.

Dan

I have a factory leaning post in which I added 4 rocket launchers to. Depending on what your primary usage is will determine if a seat back is what you want. My family mostly uses our boat for fishing and tubing so a seat back is not desired as we seldom sit directly on the seat. I am currently looking to have some modifications done to the seat: (1.) remove the cooler retainer tubing from the aft end and have padeyes installed for a strap, I get tired of lifting the cooler to remove/ install. (2.) Have a hinge welded on the fore end of the post so the cusion can be tilted forward and install a (custom-built) Star-board storage unit underneath. I spoke w/ a local guy whom has the Taco Brand leaning post that would answer my problems but I can modify mine cheaper than buying a new one.

Thanks! I would have never thought about lifting a cooler over a retainer bar. The under seat storage also sounds like a good idea.

Any other thoughts to be considered before I order the leaning post.

I appreciate the help.

I had a removable back rest on the leaning post in my old Grady. Back rest went on when the family was on the boat and came off when I needed use of all four rod holders. Best of both worlds...

I really like the leaning post in the Grady pics, the fold-down foot rest and diamond plate storage top are great! The model sold by Taco has a backrest that pretty much works the same way as the one in the Grady pics in that it has a backrest that will fit into the rocket launchers. You can look it up on West Marine's website under Taco leaning post.
