Hi Guy's. I am heading down to the NY boat show on Thurs. and was thinking about picking up the lettering to put the name on the boat. I want to put the name on the sides right in front of the Parker name and on the back. What would be a good font size? I have the boat all wrapped up so measuring now is not happening.

Also when putting the the boats location on the back do you use where you live or where the boat is docked? Does this even matter?

Thanks
Mike

Size is totally up to you. Some of our members have gone anywhere from 6 to 12", with the length of the name being the limiting factor.

Hailing port is totally up to you.
We had a 200'+ super-yacht docked here in Annapolis with a hailing port of Las Vegas not long ago.

Last time I looked, Las Vegas was in the desert with no water within several hundred miles, but it doesn't matter when selecting a hailing port.
I have seen "North Pole", "My Inner Space", and "Earth" as hailing ports, so the decision is totally up to you.

Have fun with it!

Your hailing port should be where the boat is docked, but where you live is also common.

Click here to see the CFR regs: http://tinyurl.com/3gkks8

Legally, the regs say this:
A Hailing Port is your choice of city to be marked on the vessel. You can choose any city in the United States as prescribed in the U.S. Dept. of Commerce's Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 55DC. You must display it on the outside of your vessel in compliance with prescribed instructions.

Also, regarding size of lettering:
Official Number and Hailing Port Regulations
On ALL vessels the OFFICIAL NUMBER must be permanently marked in block-type Arabic numerals not less than three (3) inches in height on some clearly visible interior part of the hull and that the number cannot be obliterated or obscured.

On vessels exclusively designated for PLEASURE the name and hailing port should be marked together in clearly legible and durable letters not less than four (4) inches in height on a clearly visible exterior part of the hull.

On COMMERCIAL vessels the bow and stern markings must meet the following requirements:

BOW MARKINGS:
1) marked in clearly legible and durable letters not less than four (4) inches in height on some clearly visible exterior part of its port and starboard bows.

OR

2) marked in clearly legible and durable letters not less than four (4) inches in height on clearly visible exterior parts adjacent to the port and starboard bows in order to avoid obliteration.

STERN MARKINGS:
1) marked in clearly legible and durable letters not less than four (4) inches in height on some clearly visible exterior part of its stern.

OR

2) marked in clearly legible and durable letter not less than four (4) inches in height on a clearly visible part adjacent to the stern in order to avoid obliteration.

I looked at the boat show and they wanted 200.00 for 6" letters. This was to do both sides. I think I can get it cheaper at a local sign shop.

The NY show a was pretty much a waste of time. Two rooms only not a lot of boats. There were some vendors selling but they did not have a lot of display area. The only good thing was that you could go on any boat with out waiting. The sales people never even approached us on most of the boats. I think 2 in total came and talked to us. I did hear that they cancelled the shuttle from Grand Central to the show because no one was showing up. We lucked out with parking NYPD has a precinct right on 42nd. st. and they hooked us up with parking right there on 42nd.. It was 15.00 to get in I did get touch the GPS that I want to get so it was worth it for me. I tried to make a deal at the show d\for the GPS. The manufacture was the one I was talking to. He told he could not sell it to me but vendors at the show could. He also gave me there prices. 499.00 hmm.. That's not a deal I told him. That's the regular price. I also told him that I could get it online for 384.00 and his reply was I know but can't tell you other than that the Norwalk show was way better then the NY show.

As far as I know, you don't need to state a hailing port on your boat unless it is a documented boat.
