I have a 2005 23 DVCC. The livewell pump is a dual port model. I believe it is a Rule. It feeds the livewell and then also feeds water to the washdown pump. A couple of weeks ago, I hit the livewell switch and got nothing. I thought it might be a fuse. I worked on things this past weekend and now it turns on. However, it will not pump water into the livewell. I did not have to replace the fuse, by the way. It just started working after I messed around with it.
This pump has the removal pump cartridge. You unscrew the top and out comes the motor with the wiring attached. The body of the pump stays connected to the boat.
So, I have power to the pump but no water going to the livewell. I did the following to try and find the problem . . . I forced water with a garden hose through the livewell hose and into the tank (no problem). I forced water back from the livewell itself through the detached livewell hose and back to the bilge (no problem). I then attached a short hose to the "out" on the livewell pump to see if it would pump through the short hose. I laid the hose up on the livewell to simulate the livewell hose. It would not pump water through the hose. I even sucked the air out of the short hose and swallowed some salt water in the process. All I got was a trickle flowing.
So, since I have power to the livewell motor and since the impeller is working on it, I have determined (guessed) that the impeller must not be pumping the water fast enough to push it uphill and into the tank. If so, the livewell pump must be dying. For what it is worth, it does pump water out of the livewell pump when I turn it on (with the hose disconnected). However, it is not super powerful coming out.
Do you think I have a pump issue? Anything else come to mind? I think I tried to locate every other potential source of the problem without success. I hate I did not take a picture of the pump while at the beach. However, it has a blue top. You first take out a safety screw and then the top screws off. The top and the motor form one sealed part.
My question (if I have a motor problem) . . . can I just replace the motor part and leave the body connected to the existing seacock? I did a brief search online and could not find the Rule pump that matches mine. I am heading back to the beach next weekend and can get a model number then, hopefully.
Thanks for any guidance on the potential problem and fix.
