Hi,
I have a 200 hp HPDI 2 stroke yamaha 2005 on my 2005 PH w/full transom. If I can go as high as the 300 yamaha 4 stroke the 350 is the same weight. The plate in the back of the boat, are they talking about 2 stroke or 4 stroke.
Thanks
Marty D.

Marty... It does not matter whether the motor is a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke. If the max power rating is, say... 335 hp, it is 335 hp no matter what type of motor you hang.

That said, the amount of transom weight that you hang can make a BIG difference.
If the boat was originally made to hang a 500# motor and you hang an 800# motor, things could be a problem for you.

If in doubt, call the factory (with your HIN number) and see if the motor you want to hang on your transom can be done safely.

Good luck!

If you have a bracket, be sure to call the Parker factory and see what your bracket is rated to also. I am told that most armstrong brackets are rated to 250hp unless ordered other-wise. With the growth in popularity and offerings of the high hp motors, that may have changed. I know at Judge they will hang up to twin 175's on my hull and they have it rated to 350hp. However, the bracket for my single power is rated to 250hp.

I would opine that the max HP rating also had a de facto weight range in mind when so rated. Reasoning that older vintage 250s were weighing mid-500s as a rule ... the appearance of 800+ pound motors surely makes a HUGE difference as Megabyte says.

Also note that Parker upgraded their own transom bracket to wear the new heavy as heck Yam 350s.

I'm not a complete expert, but wouldn't exceeding the HP cause potential insurance issues?

Also, even if your insurance company did not catch it, and still insured you, you could be held at a different level of blame if you were ever involved in an accident, even if not your fault.

There have been 2 boating accidents in the past two years in my area, both with fatalities. I have followed the cases closely, and it is absolutely amazing the way that the lawyers pick apart the boats and try to change the blame to the innocent parties.
