I would say get a Diesel mechanic to inspect the motor. I my self like diesels, you have to maintain them (oil/fuel filters very important). The Merc outdrive is a good unit, but also require maint (anodes/lower unit oil and seals). The diesel will take some getting use to, have it surveyed. I do know for a fact a diesel will run forever if properly maintained. I have not owned a diesel boat, the Parker is a great boat.
