My mercury black max overheated and compression differential is too much. The motor is a 95/96 model, so I don't think it is worth rebuilding for $3k - $4k. Problem is these new motors are $14k-$15k for a F150 four stroke, merc or ETech around the same give or take a few dollars. I love the boat, but can't see spending that kind of money. Not sure what to do.....

You have a real decision to make. Do you really like the boat? If you were in the market for a boat would you be buying the 18' again? If the answer is yes and you foresee yourself remaining satisfied for several yrs the repowering makes sense. Did you look at the Suzuki's? Dale really likes his and when my 200 Yamaha 2 stroke dies I will put a Suzuki on my 21'

You brought up a good point, not sure if I would buy an 18' again, having two small boys, in the future a bigger boat would be more ideal. I've heard good things about suzuki however, I'm sure they are around the same price range, which I'm thinking doesn't make sense to invest in this boat. The old black max does still run, so I'm going to use it a bit longer (until it blows and turns into an anchor) while I chew on this situation. I may try to sell the 18' to someone who wants to deal with the motor situation and try to find something bigger for myself.. thanks

so far, one shop has a 12-year old 150 yamaha 2-stroke with controls ~ $3,400. Just not sure about buying another older, used motor...

If I were you I would look for a newer used 150 for sale. Lots of good motors for sale at decent prices especially w people repowering with 4-strokes.

What are the actual compression numbers and do you have pre-overheat numbers to compare them to?

Did the motor seize when it overheated?

no, the motor didn't seize, it just shut down. I don't know what the compression was before, but now one cylinder is at 90 and one at 130 with the others around 110.

I'd be inclined to give the motor maintenance doses of Ring Free and run it until it won't. There could be quite a bit of life left in that motor.
