Yesterday, I stumbled upon an ad (dealer placed) for two new leftover 1989 25" Yamaha 115s. At first, I just thought it was pretty cool that somebody had a pair of new 20 year old motors. But then I thought it would be even cooler to have one of them on the transom of my 17 Mako.

But before I get too excited about this, I wanted to find out what would be involved with getting an new 20 year old motor going. So, far I've come up with the following:

1. New water pump
2. New gear lube
3. Lube the crankcase and cylinders and turn over by hand to make sure it's free. What would I use for this? Fogging oil? How would I go about getting the crank lubed? Spray though the carbs I assume.
4. Check all wiring for dry rot
5. Check all hoses for dry rot
6. Check the oil injection systems (I think it has one)

Then there's the price. The guy is asking $4200 which I think is way too much due to the age (you can get a brand new current 115 at Ed's for $6000)...but it does have a sort of historic quality to it. NADA puts an average value on it of about $750...but that's for a used motor. What would you guys say a fair offer is if I decide to do this?

Don't get me wrong, I think the '82 Merc 115 tower of power I have for her now is pretty cool too (and would be ever sweeter with a paint job), but this 115 Yamaha would be even prettier and more efficient and would allow me to raise the transom to 25".

Thoughts?

Thanks.

$1500. The instant you start it, it becomes a used 1989 motor, even with an hour on it.

Wouldn't that be cool...
A 'new' antique!

If you can get it for the right price, it would be way cool on that Mako. 8)
