Well my first project of the spring is to get my motor cover looking better. My ox66 cover has the same notorious problem that they all seem to have its is peeling like crazy only on the top part. It seems that every ox66 motor i see has the same problem (except Kevins). I started wet sanding it last night and got it evenly smooth all over. I got to go over it one more time and then its going to get a new coat of paint. I think I have decided on a metallic black, im afraid if I try to match the Yamaha blue on the lower part it wont look right with brand new paint matched up to 11 year old paint so i figured black would be the best option. I will post more pictures of the progress as I go.

Mike... Not sure if I'm just lucky or what, but I keep my powerhead cowling covered when the boat is idle.
Got my cover from SIM, but I think you can get them at just about any Yamaha dealer, or on flea bay.

yes Kev that will be my next purchase one i get it finished, my boat sat on a rack down in VA for 10 years so the sun really beat on it and the owner before me didn't believe in wax so i know that had a lot to do with it. But its just odd that every ox66 motor i see has the problem, I don't know whether Yamaha didn't prep them right or they used lesser grade paint but it seems to be a well known problem with these motors.

An auto body shop could color match and mix up some paint for you. They just shoot it with one of those $5 Preval sprayers. I wouldn't do that for an entire motor, but for a small section like the top cowling, it should work fine. Wet sand after the color if you need and then clear coat over it.

Well I wet sanded it again last night and put a can of primer on it, I then called in the professional spray painter to do the black (Bryan) we put a decent coat on it of Krylon black gloss and let it dry for the night, today I will lightly wet sand it again and hit it with another coat. I will then buff it all out and load it up with wax for the finishing touches. Im not sure if im totally in love with the way it looks up against the lower blue part but it certainly looks better then they way it did before. It will stay black for this year and if it doesn't grow on me I will do something different next year. I will add more pics when its finished.

Greetings:

Engine covers were my project last winter. The twin 150HP Yammies on my '99 2520 were eaten up by UVs and weather. The prep work was the worst part of the project, but once completed, had a pro paint company laser-match the lower unit color on the engines, then got a pro painter to prime, paint and (after I put on new decals) clear-coat the covers. The finished products look mighty acceptable but, from this point on, I now use fabric pull-overs for the engine covers.

Regards,

Dan

Looks GREAT!! To professional for me haha  , id rather save my money for a new 4 stroke

I did mine this winter. Took off the top section, sanded it down all the way. (very tiring)

Bought the Colorite Primer, Paint and Clearcoat at Boats Inc.. (Yamaha Dealer)

All it all, came out pretty good. I could do much better second time around, but from 3' away, she looks good enough for me.

Well after a little mishap the other night (wet sanded cover and then I wiped down with acetone) which i found out later ins a no no when using Krylon, and caused ripples in the paint when i re coated it. Last night I wet sanded it again with 800 got all the ripples out and re coated it, it came out pretty good i will wet sand it one more time with 1000 grit paint again and be done with it.
