We arrived in Halifax on July 28th. We had no plan other than to get out and see what we could in one week with Halifax as our base.
I won’t go into all the usual vacation details and stick with boats and water and such.
There are a lot of boats that aren’t like what we are used to.. but I can see more of them in our future as some of these look like very economical boats.
The first thing I want to do is to introduce a guy we met We were winding our way through areas like Blomidon, Cape Split, and Halls Harbor. Near the end of the road to Cape Split, a bit past Scots Bay, we found a “boat ramp” and a dock. We walked down on the dock and checked out the boats and the dock. On the way back up we met a guy on a mountain bike.
Mr. Ell is 86 years old. We chatted for a short time. Turns out he owned the big silver rig. He spent time in the Canadian Navy. I didn’t ask questions about the boat but he did offer, “I built most of it myself”. He described going through trying to fish for a living but now he just has fun and cruises around.
After we parted ways, he slung his leg over the bike and coasted full speed down the sharp hill to the dock. I wish I could have been quick and shot a video of that!
Of course the tides were incredible. At this location there was probably navigable water to the dock about 2hours before and 2 hours after high tide.
Mr. Ell’s boat.
Here is a picture of Mr. Ell after he sped down the hill. He keeps his bike under a tarp by the boat.
Same boats a couple of hours later:
Interesting how there is a chock for the boat to keep it level when no water.
Here is a picture of Karen walking up the ramp. Talk about a no frills ramp! Boat at the top looks derilict. Not pictured is a giant winch to pull the boats up the incline....(I think I might have one..)
A picture further back to include what I believe would be the Minas Channel. The rock to the right of the dock is lava rock.
Much more to follow......
