Oil Tank Mounting Brackets

Greetings:

My 1999, 2520 with twin 150, 2-stroke, Yammies has two oil tanks mounted in the aft bilge area. The tanks have never been a problem, but the metal mounting brackets have rusted badly. In assessing the rust, I believe that corrosion control efforts would be ineffective. I'm thinking about pulling out the metal brackets and replacing them with nylon/plastic battery hold-down hardware and straps. Has anyone made this change? Anyone have any advice?

if its galvanized let it rust wont hurt anything. If you want to switch it out go for it. not sure that it would be that good to replace with plastic/nylon. After some time the plastic will get hard and break. Or because of the weight of the oil it might break from the beginning if its full.

Does it look something like this ??

I made a box of extruded pvc and added a nylon strap to hold it in. A mild acid solution or Hull Bight will remove the rust stains.

The other option is to shop around for a new oil tank. Complete units can be had for about $200.

Thanx for the idea about making a case out of extruded pvc. The pic you sent looks exactly like the bilge in my boat, complete with rust stains. This chore will be added to my annual maintenance list for completion when the weather cools off a bit.

Go for the Battery, plastic nylon combo. Did it two years ago on rec from my mechanic, has worked like a charm. Don't forget to fill the holes in the deck before replacing. Good Luck.
