Im adding new power to my 21 sou'wester cc. It has a Yamaha 150 on her now. I'm pretty set on the etec. Does anyone think moving up to the 175 would hurt or should I stick with the 150. What pitch prop.

Good question - I can't provide an answer but something else to consider is weight difference of what boat was designed for versus the potential weight of a higher HP and possibly 4Stroke engine.

If there is a max HP rating on the placard for the boat, I'd try to find an approximate weight for an engine in the year of boat was manufactured and compare it to your engine options today.

I haven't read through it, but see there is a message here about a re-powered boat which now has the scuppers underwater.

the placard is no more so that's why I was hoping I could get some help. The motor on her now is a 1988 Yamaha v6pro 150 in which the past couple of months has started to show her age. This boat has been in the family from day one and always will. I think that 175 etec would be sweet. How does your boat sit with that 200

I meant to post this pic. With the 150 and a full tank of unleaded she sits pretty high in the water.

Fully loaded with 95 gal of gas, 40 gal of water in bait tank, large cooler with ice, batteries and everything else it easily rides well above the scuppers. You are < 100lbs difference in the Etec and the carbed 150 Yam. You will have no problems except staying in the boat when you put the hammer down. The Etec has incredible low end torque and the hole shot is amazing. I had a 115 Etec on my skiff and loved it. If I could stand the price I would put one on my Parker. Fuel economy = to a 4Stroke, almost as quiet, but more get up an go. As a bonus no dealer service for 3 yrs. If you pull the trigger, make sure to have it set up on XD100 oil.

My fire department owns two 21 SE rescue boats.
One has a 150hp OX66, the other a 225hp Merc.

The Yamaha and the Merc are within 3 knots of each other at WOT.
That tells us that more hp doesn't always convert to more speed.

Megabyte is correct but the hole shot and ability to rapidly accelerate through slop and a following sea make the extra HP really shine.

Thanks guys for all the input. Just talked to a dealer in Newport news, va. $13,800 for 175 installed with new throttle and cables and prop testing. Gonna do a little more shopping but that seems to be the deal right now to me.
