I have planer boards that I use for fishing and the althread bolts are rusting. Therefore causing a stain on the deck floor when they are stored between fishing trips. I have tried full strength bleach to rid the rust stain but without success. Anybody have a suggestion as to how to get rid of the stain.

Get a bottle of muratic acid from a building supply store (used for cleaning masonry), pour some in a cheap plastic spray bottle and spray on the rust stain, let set a few seconds (5-15 seconds) and rinse with fresh water, repeat until rust is gone.

There is a rust remover called "FSR" (fiberglass stain remover) It is a blue gel and you simply brush it on the stain. After a few minutes, I apply more and work in with the paint brush. It's active ingredient is oxolic acid, a much milder chemical than muriatic acid. It might take time and a few applications, but I've been very happy with the results. It is made by the Davis Company. A 16 ounce jar is approx. $11 or $12. You should find it at any large boat supply store.

Or, for $1.99 you can buy some Barkeepers Friend at Walmart. Make a liquied paste out of it. Apply to the stained area, let it sit for about 5 minutes. Rub (gently) and rinse.

You'll be amazed. I swear by that product. Not as dangerous to use as acid products, or products that have acidic components.

Agreed, nothing better than BKF. Its almost like a powder compound when mixed with a bit of water. Anything that BKF doesnt take off a bit of bleach will..........used separately of course. Good Luck!

BKF is sold in the cleanser (like comet) aisle. Walmart, usually charges less than your local supermarket. BTW, it contains oxalic acid, just like the "FSR" product I posted about yesterday. Lacking a paint brush, I scooped some "FSR" out of the jar with my fingers and applied it. No ill effect on my hand.

I used the 3-M Deck Cleaner this spring and it got everything off. Mostly used a brush in some problem areas I hit it with a sponge that had the scrubbing pad on one side. It is expensive but I didn't need to use much the bottle should last me a couple of years.

BFK all the way!! I just used some of this for the first time the other day. After reading about it here.Works awesome, just follow the directions.Make a little paste w/it,and rub GENTLY,and the stains lifted right off.
.98 a can at Home Depot...should have bought 5.
MJ.

After this experience with the rust stains from my planer boards, we are going to remove all hardware from the planer boards and go with stainless which we should have in the first place.

Bar Keepers Friend did the trick to get the rust stain off the deck. I tried Non-Skid Deck Cleaner from 3 - Stars and it didn't even start to remove the stain but BKF did the trick and is a friend for life for me.

There is stuff in a little brown bottle called WINK, it can be found in most hardware stores, about $3.00. removes it without rubbing ect. Just make sure you rinse the deck when the stain is gone. Probably has muriatic acid in it.

There's a product called " Easy on "or "On and Off" I can't remember which, that's made to take the exhaust stains off the transoms of diesels that I used on my skum stains at the waterline of my hull. It was given to me to try by the marina owner and it worked very well. Works on rust too. It's very strong stuff and you have to wash area thoughly after using. I wouldn't make a habit of using it but it worked for me and now that I brought the bottom paint up a few inches I shouldn't have to use it next year.
