Just saw a magazine add for lower units made by SEI. Wondering if anyone had experience with these aftermarket units. $800.00 for a new lower unit. Not sure if the old saying applies, "Too Good to be True"

So im in my "old " boat and the lower unit which was wearing finally gives out ...........ok its summer i busy working.......
Ok i mention SEI to my GUY!!!! oh no way, impossible its gotta be a scam!!!! we will give you a 1 yr and bla, bla blaH.... so i fall prey to a $2100 bs job... and its done........hummmmm it lasta 11 months and ...WHAM blows a crack in housing .... so they warranty it ...it lasts till next year an ddoes the same crap, but this time when i go back the answer is NOPE WARRANTY is over ....ok F YOU so i buy the SEI and bring it to the "SAME SHOP" they feel bad so they install it , and while im there too.....NEW water pump and $150 later in labor im on my way........

Humm wouldn't you know they now sell SEI funny , no so much for me ....that same unit is still running perfect and under 1 more additional yr of coverage for $750 cant beat em ....go 4 it .........

It's good to hear the feedback. Like I said in the pm, I'm not in the market for a LU but was just surprised by the price.

I got a new lower unit from SEI and had to send it back to them 4 times.

It seized after 5 minutes in the water in a no wake zone, sent it back.

They repaired it and sent it back UPS, it was out of the box int eh back of the UPS truck smashed, sent it back.

Got another one back, broke it in over the recomended time frame, put the boat up for the winter. Changed the fluid in the spring only to find the unit had water in it. sent it back.

Go it back , they told me it was a bad housing and they would take all the guts and put it in another housing and guess what UPS smashed it again.

Decide to take a torch and hammer and bang out the dings, put it on and have about 50 hours on it now.

I will say that SEI was very good about replacing / repairing it and it has a 3 year unconditional warranty.

I'll keep you posted

The one in the post above bit the dust with Lucky John on board and we had a nice 8 hour conversation/ nap while we got towed in.

The next one had a bearing noise right out of the box and it was damaged in shipping...again.

I sent it back and they refunded my money minus shipping.

Bottom line is I got really good and changing lower units, I could do the whole job in like 5 minutes with my eyes closed now.

You get what you pay for. Cheap China/US parts and lots of "that never happened before" and " we never had a unit come out of the box in shipping before".

Buy the real deal and forget the cheap stuff.

My core was trashed so I didn't have one to get rebuilt after the whole SEI saga so I sold the top half and bought a new $18,000 engine.
