My 2005, 225 4 stroke Yamaha has a Tach and Speed gauge - I see that the speed gauge is no longer working......where does Yamaha get its speed info from? Is it water flow thru an opening somewhere on the engine?

Any idea on what could be wrong would be very helpful.

Thanks

Yep. On the leading edge of the motor foot, there is a very small pitot hole that the system uses to gauge speed via water pressure. It doesn't take much dirt to clog that hole, but there is an easy fix...

Take a standard twist drill bit (1/16" I believe) in your fingers (do not chuck the bit in a drill-motor), and roll the bit with finger pressure to clean the dirt out of the hole.

Good luck!

The next time you have the LU off to change the impeller, pour some kind of mild cleaner in the vacuum hose and blow it out with compressed air. That will loosen up any built up crud.
Don't worry, this is a long-standing problem with Yammies.

My first issue is to find the hole.....my boat is in the water, no trailer so only way I can look for the hole is to trim up the engine all the way, get down on the platform and see if I can find it.......

Is there a way to describe the holes location so my investigation starts close to the spot?

Thanks to all for the help!

Best way I can describe it... it is about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the foot and right on the leading edge of the case.
If the hole is plugged, it will be difficult to see, but if you run your fingers along the leading edge of the foot, you should be able to find it.

Trim the motor all the way up and turn it completely to one side for better access.

been working on the boat getting ready for next weeks launch....went to check the pitot hole (225 Yamaha) and yes it's clog'd....took a 1/16" drill (perfect size) and by hand, rotating the drill, started to clean it out - the drill is in the hole about 3/8" - decided to stop and ask before I went in any further with the drill.....anyone have an idea about how far in I should be able to go with the drill - other than air would you blow or spray in any kind of a solvent....
where does the hole go? any chance something could get damaged if you went in too far?

my boat had a separate unit next to the xducer...it corroded out and i chopped the wire...

i let the chart plotter do my speed for me =)
