I programmed my DSC-capable VHF radio with my MMSI number. Is there any way to perform an end-to-end test of this without having a real emergency? That is, can I test that the radio was programmed correctly, that when a distress call is made, the radio will transmit the correct number and position, and that the Coast Guard, or whatever agency is supposed to monitor the transmission can correctly link my call to my registration information? A tall order, but seems like there are many moving parts and it would be best to find out if it all works before a real emergency.

As far as I know, there is no way to test the "Emergency" function of the DSC radio. You can, however, test that you are successfully transmitting your GPS coordinates to another DSC equipped VHF. You can have someone with your MMSI send you a "DSC Position Request" or if you have someone else's MMSI, you can send them a "DSC Position Send".

I don't own one, I was going to install one this year and I may push it out another year.

There are some choices.

You can send the distress and immediately cancel it. See your manaul.

You can request a position on DSC from another vessel and get a reply.

Your radio may have a feature to do an all ships Pan Pan message for logs in water or something like that.
