I'm playing around with some new design ideas for the interior of the boat and I'm thinking of lots of ways to better utilize the available space (at least on my boat, Parker was not particularly concerned with maximizing available space, apparently).

One of the ideas I have is to take the current "box" that a pedestal type helm chair is mounted to and turn it into a sink unit, utilizing a fold-over captain's chair. The concept is to "hide" the sink underneath the helm until it is needed (I can't imagine having to drive the boat and wash my hands at the same time...). I also want to take the space previously occupied by an Origo alcohol stove and re-configure it to accommodate an easily replaceable butane stove (that cost about $30 each and burn HOT).

Does anyone know if a captain's chair that has this sort of hinge mechanism? Or perhaps a separate hinge mechanism I can adapt to a regular captain's chair?

Here's a sketch that I spent about 10 minutes on last night in bed just so you can visualize what I am thinking.

I dont have a pic to post but pilot seat was replaced with an aftermarket unit. The back tilts forward and the entire seat does too with a front hinge and a sliding bolt on the back side to lock it in place. PO did the install. I dont like the color but the seat is very comfortable and it can be reupholstered

Thanks Brent. Do you have any pictures of your seat in the normal and tilted positions? I don't want to mess with a removable one, because then it has to be stowed somewhere. I just want to be able to reach down, flip a latch, and tilt the seat up out of the way to access the sink.

Hi Brent

No I dont but will be in Florida in a couple of months and will take some

Best

That would be awesome - thanks. I'm trolling around for inspiration.

will do

I like the flush mount. If you had 2 of them, the second one could be mounted at another location on the boat or on a portable storage box and use it as needed in the cockpit. Another idea is building a slide in top like a table top of King board that covers the seat area and the space to the helm.
That would add a lot of useful space when at anchor or overnighting

if this makes sense

SeaCraft come up with that in the 70's. 8)

Hey, there's MY idea! :)

I was thinking of a something with a bit less naugahyde and simulated wood grain, but that is the general idea. Looks a lot like the '68 VW camper my family had when I was a kid. :D

Aha - I just found a boat that has almost what I'm talking about. Apparently Seasport does this:
