I have a 2120 SC with 200 HP Yammi 4-stroke. At slow speeds the wheel turns smoothly and easily. At hight speeds, esp WOT, it turns quite hard. This seems like it would be perfectly normal, since it is having to deal with engine thrust, etc., yet one would think "hydraulics are hydraulics".

I have been in other boats at high speed and the wheel seems to turn just as easily as at low speeds.

Should I expect greater difficulty turning at high speeds with the Parker, or does this mean something is not working correctly?

Thanks.

#1, I bet the motor is mounted waaaaaaay deeper than she needs to be, so the hydraulics need to overcome the water rushing around the LU.

#2, your skeg trim fin could be set wrong - does it turn easier 1 way vs. the other?

#3, you are trimming up the OB when running on plane, right? Trim up 'til she blows out then lower it. Note: Many times one does need to 'trim in' some or a lot before carving a sharp turn, the definition of 'sharp' being dependent on speed, sea state, trim, hull and other factors.

#4, check your fluid level.

But it also can be symptomatic of the helm ratio, which impacts # of turns lock-to-lock, plus the diameter of the wheel you're turning. Specifics would help us troubleshoot your install.

power steering assist. mine does it too along with a cobia, jupiter, regulator, etc that i have been on.

Brad,

What do you mean by "power steering assist"? Are you telling me what it is called, or are you suggesting something that I need.

Thanks.

Dale,

It is shrink-wrapped for the winter at the marina  In the spring I will check your suggestions. I bought it used and it came with the 200 Yammi, so I don't know if the engine is mounted too low or not.

Seems to be equal resistance during either port or starboard turns. Standard diameter wheel.

Thanks.

ITguy, I have the same boat and engine combination. My boat turns just as easily and as smoothly at low as at high speed. I think Dale is correct about a setup issue versus a design issue with the boat. As Dale suggests sometimes it the LU trim-tab is not set correctly to compensate for engine torque, it would make turning harder to one-side versus the other. You may want to have the marina look at our setup in the spring. Good luck and I hope you find a resolution. Let us know how ou make out.

power assist is something that you can add. its easy to turn my motors at speed off center then it requires more force to bring them back to center. If that makes any sense. Its more noticable when doing u turns and stuff. If i put the wheel all the way to one side and power up and try to straighten it out it takes some work.

It adds a motor to assist your steering effort, just like that in your car, see this post here.

It's only another $2500 before install costs  !
