Hi - thought I'd mention this to all you VST junkies...
So I have twin engines (1999 - 250 ox66)
This past weekend I intended to clean the filters. Never been done before w/ 600+ hours on them.
Port engine done. No problem
Starboard engine, the one that had been running kinda crappy... pulled the VST lower tank off, and I notice this piece of sheet metal hanging down above the float before I took the filter off. I thing to my self WTF is that? I didn't see that on my other engine....
So I investigate further and what is is is a piece of moulded sheet metal that is MEANT to stay in place with 3 rivets. I think the float is suppose to touch against it when fully floating. Problem is that the bugger wasn't being held in place by the rivets and it was hanging down preventing the float from rising properly.
So now I'm thinking WTF am I supposed to do now? So I decide I will try and secure it. I put it back in place (3 holes in the sheet metal sit nicely over the original rivets), and I then attempted to tap the rivets with my mini socket wrench (like a small hammer). Problem... the float was in the way. So I had to take the float off. Nearly LOST the little pin shaft that lets the float move up and down. BE CAREFUL if you do that.... holy crap I would have been BS if I lost that...
Anyway, once the float was off I had the ability to tap the rivets enough to flatten them down a bit to hold the sheet metal in place. (I hope)
Here is the kicker. The plate is not meant to be removable. It does not show up in the parts/repair manual. I think it's a fluke that it dropped down.
But anyway something else for you to double check next time you are in your VST.
Ed
