This might sound stupid but I can't find nobody to tell me what the difference is in between car wax and boat wax ?

Anybody ?

Can it hurt the gelcoat if I use car wax ?

Thanks

Price!

FWIW I use to use trad waxes, like Mequier's or Collenite's Fleet wax, their paste wax having a great reputation for durability and protection, albeit not the glossiest coating going.

But I have switched to advanced polymers like NuFinish and RejeX, that put on a glosy shine and I find 2 coats to last my NE season. Unlike paste waxes though, which will clean a little as they go, you need to thoroughly prep the surface to be done with these new space-age finishes, as that is what it truly is ... a "finish" coat to the frp.

Others use wax and like that too! I like the ease of which these polymers go on, I don't even bother with buffers, less the last touch just to give a uniform sheen. And they go on fast! One low tide at the beach ... and I'm done.

Gelcoat is not the same as painted steel.
There is a reason why marine waxes are formulated differently than auto waxes.

I don't think an auto polish would hurt the gelcoat, but I don't see any reason to use it either.

Edit: Like Dale, I also like some of the new formulations.
My go-to recently has been StarBrite with Teflon.

Surface preparation is definately the key ingredient.
Don't wax until the surface has been spotlessly cleaned and prepared - then wax.

Thanks Guys it confirms my thought.

It's great to have knowledgeable people around !!!

Thanks
