The Yamaha 150 four stroke on my 04 2120 just clicked over 1000 hours. Any thoughts on the operators manual recommendation that the timing belt be changed at 1000 hours? One dealer said oh yes, and you should replace the belt tensioner as well. That pushes the cost to almost $1000.00 Another mechanic told me few people follow the factory service recommendations. I don't want to damage my motor or have it leave me stranded somewhere. I also don't want to waste $1000.00. Is this a job that someone of average to above average mechanical skills could tackle?

Preventive maintenance is a part of ownership.
Sorry to be blunt, but...
If you intend to keep the boat (and motor), follow the recommended maintenance schedule.
You will be glad that you did.
 
Just finished this last week. I dropped it at the mechanic to replace the belt. Told him I thought the tensioner also needed to be replaced (I could hear a high pitched noise and thought that might be it). He said that it doesn't usually need to be replaced. When he got it apart he found that it was bad. Nice and quiet again. Total for mine (included all new zincs inside the engine area, fuel filters, VST filters and oil change) was about $1500. It took me 8 years to get to the 1000 hours so it is a good investment in my book. Hoping to get to a 2000 and 3000 hour service too.

I did mine on 2 engines, tensioners also. It would be foolish not to.

Its not really a home thing unless you have the tools to keep the cams from rolling over. If that happens you loose timing on the engine and bad things could result.

You could squeeze another season and do it in the winter.

With a Clymers.......I would rate it as a 10(hardest). With the Yamaha manual I would rate it as a 5.

Remove battery cables. Remove spark plugs, Rotate the engine to line up the timing marks, Release belt tensioner, remove flywheel, remove belt, install new belt, retract tensioner, install flywheel. Rotate engine over by hand and double check timing marks and install top cover.Install spark plugs.Install battery cables.

Make sure the timing marks are lined up when installing the belt and after turning it over.

If you have any concerns about doing it,make an appointment with a knowlegable Yamaha dealer.

Thanks for all the input. I recently purchased this boat, and have never had a four stroke before. I certainly hope to get many more thousands of hours out of this motor. I have the complete service history for this motor, and all recommended services have been performed on time. I kind of figured it was going to be the right thing to do, but also was hoping that I wasn't going to incur such an expense after just purchasing it, and only using the boat four times. Ouch! I had the timing belt done this past winter. I had almost 1500 hours. They did not need to replace the tensioner. I think they charged me 3.5 hrs labor plus cost of the belt.
 
Unfortunately it was not figured into the sale price of the boat; I didn't do all my homework. When I looked at this boat I fell in love with it, and my emotions took over for my common sense. It had updated electronics, a second station and autopilot. I had been looking at Parkers for about a year, and one of my must haves was the second station. I owned a CHawk 245 decades ago and loved the second station. The other plus was this was a well cared for boat with all the service records. VERY happy with her. Due to go in for timing belt replacement next week. - Scott
 
Since you just purchased this boat, I would continue with the excellent service history thus far. If she's in as good a shape as you describe, it's well worth the initial investment up front for years of worry free enjoyment. My brother who has many high end cars tells me 1.) Do the maintenance when it's due per the owners manual and 2.) if something breaks, repair it immediately. These two recommendations will add much longevity to a working unit. Enjoy your Parker! You should be very pleased with your purchase. :lol:
