Yamaha F250 lower unit will not go back on

Guys after replacing the water pump I now cannot get the lower unit all the way back on. It stops about 1" from going all the way in. Tried it in neutral and in gear. Everything lines up but it wont go in. Not too much grease on top of the drive shaft and again the gear shift lines up as well as the water tube. Any ideas?

The Splines on the driveshaft are not engaging. Make sure you grease the splines and rotate the driveshaft just slightly....You may have to rotate the shaft a few increments and a number of times to get the splines to align.

DO NOT put any grease on the VERY TOP of the driveshaft! Keep all grease ONLY on the splines!!! Otherwise she can hydro-lock together (due to vacuum) and you'll never get it apart again!

ok...got it on easily tonight. Had a friend at the helm shift to forward while I was lifting on it...went in within 1/2 inch then to neutral... same, went into reverse and went right in no problem.

Talking about the lower unit....mind out of the gutter!
