I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Parker 1801 for saltwater fly fishing around NY/NJ. The marine surveyor did a fantastic job inspecting the boat and turned up a couple of items with the outboard (115hp Yamaha) that will need to be addressed. In particular, the water pump has never been changed and the lower unit seals need to be replaced.

Does anyone out there have a good recommendation for a Yamaha mechanic in the Raritan Bay/Sandy Hook area? Even better would be a Staten Island mechanic since that is the boat's ultimate destination. However, I don't see *any* SI Yamaha mechanics listed on the Yamaha website. The boat is on a trailer so I can move it easily.

Thanks in advance. BTW, I would highly recommend Bob Dunkelberger for marine surveying. He operates out of Cape May, NJ. I can't wait to splash this boat. :D

In my opinion the best YAMAHA service in the state of NJ is SOUTH HARBOR MARINE in waretown nj I know its a ride for you but these guys really shoot straight. on the other hand your service needs are very basic and it should be easy to find a more local service facility. schrader in point pleasant is also very good.

If you are replacing the complete lower unit the new water pump will come pre-installed. I would imagine any competent marine mechanic could install this for you with there eyes closed. 6 nuts and 1 bolt old one off new one on. Thats it.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll probably check at least one of these places out. The lower unit is fine except for a slow leak that the marine surveyor found when he pressure-tested the lower unit. Since it will be dismantled to replace the seals, I figured I would have the water pump impeller changed at the same time.

Thanks again and I hope to see some of you on the water!

operative word there would be "competent"........not as easy to find (at least around here) as we would think.

Same around here good thing is there are many to choose from...It's unfortunate its this way.
