This is going to be a can of worms but any help I can get is going to be appreciated. There is a 2501 DV that is for sale and it is at the right price however that price also comes with twin 225s with 1500 hours. The motors are 2006 and they say they are in good shape. I know there are motors out there with 5000 hours out there but what am I getting myself into. I am more inclined to lean towards twins with high hours than a single engine pushing all the weight.

Also what questions should be asked when dealing with a motor this high in hours?

Thanks

JD

Personally, I would go with twins, most will dis-agree but you run at lower RPM's with twins in my opinion, plus the issue of two motors for safety is what I like. Again most will dis-agree.

I wouldn't be scared at all about Yammis with 1500 hrs depending on condition of that particular engine.

I've run a twin engine Parker for 7 years, great setup.

I would ask the seller for the service records and would connect to Yamaha Diagnostic Software (YDS) and printout or export to file various reports. There is one report showing the number of hours at various rpm ranges which is a good snapshot of how the boat was operated

FWIW I bought YDS off Craig's list for $100. It included cable, manual and latest software. I had to contact the seller for the correct driver which was not on the CD and he sent it promptly. After installing it, the software ran perfectly

Twins are cool 8)

I sure wouldn't disagree as my brother is still running twin 1987 Yam 150XPs (2-strokes) on his 23' deep-V Grady White! As stated,w ith twins he can cruise at a liesurely 3500 RPMs and gets outstanding fuel economy, specially for 2-strokes, plus it still has power to boot and the redunancy of the 2 motors.

1500-hours is nothing to a modern motor IF taken care of. And personally, I'd rather have a well-cared for older OB with somewhat higher hours than a newer abused one with lower hours ...
