We have a 1999 Parker 2320 which has the Mercury 225 SaltWater series motor on it currently. This thing is extremely loud, smokes like crazy, and eats a lot of gas. We are thinking of changing it for a Mercury OptiMax 225 or a Mercury Verado 225. What do you guys recommend for us to do? Why do you recommend us to do it? What alternatives would you recommend?

Thank You

In my area, Yamaha and Suzuki are the dominant brands followed by Mercury. I mention this only to point out the need to consider your dealer and service availability options in your area. I have been hearing a lot of good comments about the Etecs in recent years. But where I boat, I would be in the minority having one and may be limited in places to get parts etc?? Something to think about?

For ETEC what is performed at 300 hr service? Fuel and water filter, plugs, thermostats, water pump, Lower unit lube?? What are you paying for xld 100 oil? I have a 4 stroke and it is quiet and think the ETEC is loud at low rpms and cruising speeds?

Im in the San Francisco bay area. Mercury is more serviciable here from my knowledge.

yes that is all they look at 300hrs or 3 years just a simple scheduled maintence. I run xld 50 simple because u can find it anywhere it burns slightly more but mainly cuz most shops have it. As for the noise can't hear it when u first turn it over. Only way u now it's started is the noise of the streaming water from the cooling system as u give it more throttle noticeable there is and increase in noise but yet I can still here the streaming water and trolling speed up to like 3mph I would say at higher rpm the noise is increased to about half of what an older carb 2 stroke sounded like. But that why someone have engines is because they like the way they sound. As for the etec motor it self its lighter, better hole shot, better fuel economy, more continuos power. It doesn't bog down when ur climbing a wave or getting up on plain the computer sees the resistance and gives it more power to keep that rpm. That's when u see those pulling competion when they drag that heavy four stroke underwater. I burn .2 to .3 gallon per hour on the troll roughly 2mph and get around 2.5 to 2.7 mpg for fuel economy. My little kicker gets .3Liters per hour on the troll. This my third etec as I have one on a smaller boat. Never any problems they run hard. I have about 700hours on that one. I own a 250hp, 115hp, and 15hp H.O. U can't hear the little kicker at all. A lot of wisdom as came off this site in terms of how to get the bow down on these boats because there a$$ heavy but start off by getting a motor that's lighter then the rest, then add big tabs, permatrim and the rest to control ur boat but I'll gaurantee u will stop at the tabs. I can bury the knose on my boat. Just think about it and put ur best foot forward too in terms of what is convenient for dealer/ mechanics. I live close to San Francisco but we call it the Bay Area. I have evinrude dealers/ mechanics all around me. More keep showing up too because what kind of engine there putting out these days. Remember these engines are not carbed

Any issues in running in the cold water? -you made comment earlier that r ETEC were less expensive whereas others said ETEC costed more and these are new design motors abs can't compare to old 2 stroke . 2 different motors

no issues running or getting started. They are fuel injected right into the piston. Etec right now because they are pushing there new etec g2 are very inexpensive. They have done there homework once again increase there parameters with fuel economy and torque. Also making there motor more stream line in wiring, control configuration, and maintenance( mostly making everything Easier to get to) and pushing the fly by wire technology, but only ranging from 200hp to 300hp I believe. I just got my motors register this month and they are running a deal. 7 year warranty and free rigging. That means icon gauges and controls if u like. We could touch more on that if u like. I'm very thrifty when coming to buying stuff so in terms of the oil I went out and bought bulk oil. 16gallon barrell cost me 300 so 18.75 a gallon. These engines should not be compared to carb 2 strokes cuz there not. The cons about this motor is the oil tank some say, or the width of the prop it throws. That buys them a small bit of leverage

How much did you pay for your motor?

I've been told the resale value on Evenrude compared to Mercury is horrible.

17k for 250 evinrude with icon gauges not sure what the resale value is. Sounds like a false statement though.

Wait a minute. Your in the bay area right? What dealer did you go to? It was 17k installed with all the wiring and guages including tax? I'm in Concord.

Can you please pm me your name and number. My dad wants to talk to you really badly. Our boat is currently in the shop after our fishing trip yesterday.

thank you. He will call you in a little bit.. He is in a meeting. What dealer did you buy this from? Was it new?

btw,, i've been hitting the refresh button over and over again. I called a few dealers and the prices are nothing like yours
