Hey Guys,
I know this has been kicked around a bunch but I wanted to get some thoughts about my situation. I bought a used 2510 with twin 200 OX66's. The boat was sold as the result of a divorce. I have not been able to find out what type of 2 st oil was used. Is there anything special I would need to do if I started using a syn blend ie pennzoil and the remaining/exsisting oil in the resivors is not a syn blend. Will mixing the two types of oil be ok. I have always used yama-lube oil and a friend suggest I try the pennzoil. It is cheaper.

Thoughts and prefered oil welcomed.

Yamalube is a blend and so is some of the Pennzoils, just run tank down a little and make the change. Been there done it with no problems. Good luck with boat.

ive used yamalube and ive used west marine, and I cannot tell the difference in my HPDI between the two.

I did however buy a few gallons of the walmart brand TCW3 and I find it to be a little smokier than my normal west marine premium...Once I'm out of it I will not be re-purchasing it, if only because i can smell it (normally I can't)

My walmart does not seem to carry the Pennzoil synthetic blend or full synthetic however, if they did I'd purchase it. I'm always on the lookout for it though.

i simply refuse to pay $30 a gallon for yamalube though.

Not sure this will apply to Yamma lube but my last boat had an Evinrude Etec and using the Evinrude 50 or 100 made leaps and bounds of a difference .....

I finally convinced my buddie who has a Grady and a 2001 OX66 to try it it made a huge difference in smoking and he burned about 15% less oil.....

the big difference was in the economy he used less oil , but his mpg went up from .9 -1.1 mpg to 1.19-1.25 mpg.....

If you add this up over a 20=30 mile day trip the high grade oil is actually cheaper.....

30 a gallon but 15% less = 25.5 a gallon
mpg @ 25 miles @ 3.39 a gallon 25x.2= 5 gallon less gas = $16.95

So for all you trying to save try this experiment:

Avg the oil consumption by filling to top b4 u go out and record the miles and refill at end of trip 3x.....

Then refill with high grade oil and do the same 3x the determine if cheap oil is the way to go ....

Me personally i went to a 4x to avoid the issues but if u have a 2x then consider the build up, the smoke and noise and the higher temperature that the motor has to work at !!!!

Again this might differ 4 some but my vette uses Mobil 1 and gets 29 mpg in 6 gear at 1700 rpm, I know its not a boat but it is using premium oil like my Etec used.....

Just a thought , and not intended to offend, just inform.....cheap oil is cheap 4 a reason it burns faster and smokier and has less vescosity and lubricants.......!!!!

I will say this Pay now or pay later, what seperates the real cheap oil from the higher priced stuff is the AMOUNT of additives put in the oil, these additives help with carbon build up which causes fouled O2 sensors on the OX66 motors and stuck rings on others and generally keeps the engine cleaner. We spend 20k on engines then skimp on oil to save $10.00 which equals about 20 cents a gallon on an average burn. And yes they all are TCW3 nowadays, but I believe you get what you pay for.

Reely, are you saying you used Evinrude 100 in a yamaha?
I have a source for Evinrude 100 just been afraid to use it. I guess it would be ok?

Thanks

I use Amsoil
Yamaha 2003 200HPDI
I use it in my E350 /V10
Explorer /5.7
Subaru /3.5
Lawnmower
Snow blower
Chainsaw

Here is the link for the HPDI oil if interested
I don’t work for or sell the stuff Just love it
The guy at the tool repair place I use suggested it
Also the Off Shore racing guys use it a lot and UPS Fleet

Full Synthetic

What is the absolute best oil for your outboard motor?

Is it sane to use something else because it's cheaper or because of a claim that it's as good or better?

If the answers aren't prefectly clear, can you say "Moron"?

Moron:
1) a foolish or stupid person
2) (Psychology) a person having an intelligence quotient of between 50 and 70, able to work under supervision...

...just my opinion of course....

Well the saying goes, "a fool and his money is soon parted". My main concern was mixing the oils. I have used yama-lube products forever on my yamahas. I have seen my friends use other products @15 bucks a gallon with equal success. Remember my first sentence.

I like yamaha products but frankly paying the extra 10 or 15 bucks a gallon just because it says yamaha is not a good enough reason. I am looking at the pennzoil and mercury blends I can get the pennzoil blend for 12.96 a gallon at the local sams and mercury stuff for 13.98 a gallon at a Sams close to where I keep my boat.

As far as the walmart brand goes. My brother in law uses it religously in his 96 johnson. Never had any issues and pulls a shrimp net with it. The motor probably has 2000 hrs. Yamahas tend to be more finicky and I would not consider it.

Talking about using full synthetic yam lube vs. the cheap crap !!!!

but that would be interesting ???

I wonder if yammies could us xd2100 hummmm ......

i love that stuff!!!
I dont think yamalube 2 stroke comes in full synthetic, or are you talking about 4 stroke oil? What is xd2100?

Guys, these forums are for guys to ask a question correct? And when you ask a question people reply in what they think is correct or their belief, you then take that info and do what you want with it. I see no reason for people to insult peoples intelligence with comments or innuendos because of a answer that was given. Especially when they give "0" imformation to asked question. Sorry to moderators for venting, I just like that this site is informative and hope it stays that way with out the other BS.

Joe, You can safely mix your new oil with what is in the tank now. So long as the oil in the tank meets the TCW3 specification, you will be fine.
You would be hard pressed these days to not find a TCW3 rated oil.

When I first bought my boat I was using Yamalube, but switched to Penzoil semi-syn since my motor was long out of warranty.
I saw no difference that first year between the Penzoil and Yamalube.

The following year, and ever since, I've been using Penzoil full synthetic.
It costs more that the semi-syn, but I find that it burns much cleaner.
I will get a little smoke on start-up when cold, but by the time I leave the dock... no more smoke.

I buy my Penzoil by the case from the Oil-Store.

OK ... STOP slamming others when their opinion differs from yours ...

Let's go by FACTS, as presented by NMMA, National Marine Mfgrs Assoc:

* The TC-W3 rating is a Minimum Standard, meaning the oil or brand YOU buy could be better. Minimum standards means only 'That's good enough ...'

* The TC-W3 rating is a 'performance test', but it conducted on only a 15hp outboard! The demand, stress, loading, duty cycle, and carbonization of a 2-cylinder OB is HARDLY indicative of the demands that a V4 or V6 motor puts on an engine.

* Only 2 or 3 players really make ANY of these OB 'oils' and most of it is made by the same place, where the base oilis made to minimum TC-W3 specs and the balance "may have" additives (detergents, etc.) added so as to be specifically formulated to better specifications for that OEM branded oil.

* The TC-W3 test allows up to 15% piston scuffing  and does NOT specify nor require any minimum amount of detergents to help break-down or eliminate carbon build up. Now for example, the old OMC specs for their branded oil required 0% piston scuffing and min 10% additive of detergents.

* The PowerTech 2-stroke oil sold by Wal*Mart is the same formulation as sold by one of the big 3 outboard companies under their same label.

Bottom Line:
Use what YOU feel comfortable with. In my older dirty cab'd V6 I run the cheap $8/gallon Wally*World oil when I know I'm going out on a long run, say a tuna trip where I'll put 100 +/- miles on the boat and use a gallon or more of oil.

Otherwise my standard 'go to' oil is the Pennzoil semi-synthetic that Wal*Mart sells for $12/gallon, as it is less smokey. My brother runs Yummalube and that is a Very Good TC-W3 oil from our experience. It too smokes less than pure dino TC-W3 oil.

Sorry - didn't mean to ruffle feathers. I guess I did come on a little strong.
The FACT is - if you ever have a problem with your motor and you weren't using the best oil...you'll wonder. If you use the best, that question will never arise.

I never suggested which oil is best - that's your decision.
